Argentina’s far-right President Javier Milei has marked the 30th anniversary of the deadliest terrorist attack in Argentina’s history by comparing it to the Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on October 7.

On July 18, 1994, a truck exploded outside the Argentine-Israeli Mutual Aid Association (AMIA) in Buenos Aires, killing 85 people. The attack occurred just two years after the 1992 bombing of the Israeli embassy in Buenos Aires, which killed 29 people.

Argentina has blamed Iran for both attacks, but no one has been brought to justice. Iran denies involvement in either attack.

“There is no doubt that the fanatical government of Iran is behind these atrocities (the AMIA and embassy bombings), just as it is behind so many other atrocities against humanity. To be clear, the terrorism of the tragic October 7 is exactly the same terrorism that attacked us 30 years ago,” Milei said.

Milei, a staunch supporter of Israel who compared the October 7 attacks to the Holocaust, also called for the “immediate and unconditional release” of Argentine prisoners in the Gaza Strip.

“The terrorist organization Hamas has claimed the lives of 25 of our compatriots. They are still holding over 100 hostages, including eight Argentines,” he said.
