Rebecca Taylor, Democratic County Chairwoman, Killed in Motorcycle Accident

July 17, 2024 (San Diego) – Rebecca “Becca” Taylor, chairwoman of the San Diego County Democratic Party, has died as a result of a motorcycle accident in Utah. She was on her way home from a trip when she was struck from behind.

Acting Chair Kyle Krahel-Frolander issued a statement that said in part, “Becca had an invaluable impact on so many and led San Diego to a better future. She was more than just a leader, she was a public servant. Becca was a Navy veteran, an advocate for victims of sexual assault, an OB City Council member, and a volunteer seeking resources for asylum seekers. She embodied the best of us.”

The county Democratic Party announced her death today on its website and social media “with the heaviest heart and deepest sorrow,” adding that her parents and most of her siblings were with her in the hospital.

Taylor was born in Plano, Texas in 1983 and graduated from San Diego State University in 2011. She served as an aviation electrician in the Navy, where she also volunteered as an advocate for victims of sexual assault. She founded the Veterans Caucus of the California Young Democrats in 2014 and served as its first chair. She also worked with Serving Seniors, served on the board of the Ocean Beach Town Council and as secretary of the Metro West Area Caucus. In addition, she served as volunteer manager with the San Diego Rapid Response Network and assisted asylum seekers.

Congresswoman Sara Jacobs (D-San Diego) wrote on X: “I am heartbroken by the passing of Becca Taylor. Becca dedicated her life to serving others – from the Navy to advocating for victims of sexual violence to engaging more people in our democracy. She was kind, funny, sharp, and endlessly selfless. I will miss her.”

Will Rodriguez-Kennedy, former chairman of the local party, called Taylor a “brilliant mind, passionate advocate for the party, servant of her community” and “trusted friend and confidant” in a Facebook post, adding that he was deeply heartbroken by the loss.

Congressman Scott Peters (D-San Diego) remembers Peters cheering on his campaign workers when she worked as an organizer for his 2014 campaign. “Since that time, we have remained loyal friends and supporters of each other.ther,” he said, Times of San Diego reported. “Her infectious laugh, her bright smile and her sparkle were ever present…Today we mourn the loss of a great one. This is a brutal loss for all of us.”
