ADA TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) – No one was injured when a ceiling collapsed Friday at Egypt Valley Country Club east of Grand Rapids.

The collapse occurred in a second-floor ballroom at the country club on Knapp Street NE near Egypt Valley Avenue in Ada Township. No one was in the room at the time.

“There’s a drop ceiling. It looks like a metal frame. That metal frame came loose. It fell down,” said David Murray, Ada Township Fire Chief. “That caused all the sprinkler lines to fall down, causing water to flow through the building.”

The roof itself did not collapse, Murray said.

“The country club crews did a great job here. Before we got here, they had shut off the water, they had shut off the power and they were working on the natural gas service,” the chief said.

He said emergency services had checked that everyone was present and that no one was injured.

A wedding rehearsal was supposed to take place in the ballroom on Friday evening, and a wedding was supposed to take place there on Saturday.

It is unclear what caused the collapse, Murray said.

Damage assessment was still underway Friday afternoon, but the damage was significant, managers told Egypt Valley News 8. Murray said there was “major water damage.” The first step will be to clean up the water damage, he said, and then reconstruction can begin.
