Roseanne Barr defends Ingrid Andress after performance of the national anthem

Roseanne Barr has sympathy for anyone who messes up the national anthem.

The 71-year-old former “Roseanne” star defended country singer Ingrid Andress, who faced heavy criticism on Monday for her performance of “The Star-Spangled Banner” at the MLB Home Run Derby.

Andress, 32, later admitted that she was drunk and was going to a rehab clinic.

Barr, who performed her own much-maligned rendition of the national anthem more than 30 years ago, defended Andress in an interview with TMZ on Tuesday.

The actress said the song was the “most difficult song in the world to perform” and Andress’s rendition wasn’t as bad as it was portrayed.

Barr also admitted that she still considers her performance of the national anthem to be the worst ever.

In 1990, Barr became a laughing stock for her brutal performance at a San Diego Padres baseball game.

She screamed the lyrics of the national anthem and even covered her ears during her performance.

To make matters worse, Barr capped off the infamous moment by grabbing her crotch and spitting on the pitcher’s mound.

Everyone had something to say about Barr’s performance at the time – including then-President George HW Bush.

“My reaction is, it’s a disgrace. Many people in San Diego said the same thing,” Bush said aboard Air Force One, according to the Washington Post.

In 2016, Barr explained what went wrong during her performance.

“I started too high. I knew I couldn’t hit the big note after I got about six notes,” she told the Washington Post. “So I just tried to get through it, but I couldn’t hear anything while 50,000 drunk assholes booed, yelled ‘you fat pig,’ gave me the middle finger and threw bottles at me during the song they ‘respect’ so much.”

Andress delivered a similarly poor performance on Monday at the Home Run Derby at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas.

Some MLB All-Stars, including Phillies third baseman Alec Bohm, struggled to maintain their composure as Andress sang.

Fans made fun of Andress at X and even called out Barr’s terrible performance.

“Roseanne Barr may have dropped to second place for worst anthems!!,” shouted one X-user.

“Roseanne Barr is trending in case you wanted to know how bad that anthem just was,” wrote another fan.

“Roseanne Barr still had the worst anthem ever but tonight was pretty close,” said another.

Fans also compared Andress’s performance to Fergie’s at the 2018 NBA All Star Weekend.

The Black Eyed Peas singer delivered an embarrassing rendition of the anthem, which is considered one of the worst performances.

Fergie later addressed the backlash, saying, “I like to take risks artistically, but this interpretation clearly didn’t hit the intended tone. I love this country and I honestly did the best I could.”

Barr tweeted about Fergie’s performance at the time. “Who saw Fergie’s national anthem performance at the NBA All Star Game? I think mine was more subtle,” she said.

Andress, for her part, claimed she was drunk during the Home Run Derby when she discussed her viral appearance.

“I’m not kidding you, I was drunk last night,” the “Lady Like” singer said in a statement on social media on Tuesday.

“I’m checking myself into a facility today to get the help I need,” she added. “That wasn’t me last night. I apologize to MLB, all the fans and this country that I love so much for that performance,” Andress continued. “I’ll tell you all what rehab is like. I hear it’s super fun.”
