When Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid talked about the relationship between Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce, he couldn’t help but draw a football comparison.
In the first episode of the City of the Shovel Podcast — the part of The New York Times“The Athletic – Reid noted that Kelce, 34, can take a back seat at a Swift show.
“When he goes to her concerts, she’s a star. And he can hang out there and be the support or the water carrier,” the head coach said in the podcast episode on Tuesday, July 16.
“I think there’s a great way out for him,” Reid continued, adding that he made the same comment “about Taylor, too.”
“I mean, she comes to the game, she can kind of escape the obligation of being the show,” he explained.
However, as fans know, Kelce was not only the “water carrier” on the Epoch tourNot only has the tight end been filmed by his fans every time he attends a concert – as has Swift when she attends a Chiefs game – but he also made a surprise appearance onstage at one of Swift’s shows in London late last month.
“I’m still laughing my head off/blown away by @killatrav’s Eras tour debut 🥰,” the 34-year-old Grammy winner gushed on Instagram about her boyfriend’s viral moment.
Kelce, for his part – who carried the singer across the stage during the performance – was following some football tips at that moment.
“(Former Chiefs coordinator) Coach Bieniemy always said, ‘This ball contains our dreams, goals and aspirations. You don’t drop the ball,'” he laughed as he recalled the moment with him and his brother Jason Kelce. New heights Podcast earlier this month.
“The only thing I told myself is, ‘Don’t drop the baby. Don’t drop Taylor when you go to that damn couch,'” Travis noted. “I wanted to do some extra stuff — and who knows, maybe if I ever do it again I’ll do it — but the golden rule was don’t drop Taylor.”
In fact, the whole surprise performance was Travis’ idea. After telling Swift about it – who found it hilarious – the “Anti-Hero” artist asked her boyfriend if he wanted to come.
“I was like, ‘What? I’d love to do that, are you serious? I’ve seen the show enough times – I might as well get in line here,'” he said on New Heights. “And sure enough, she found the perfect part of the show for me.”
When it comes to supporting Travis in his career, Swift may have some time to cheer on her boyfriend with her friends and family – but she also passively generates a huge amount of income for the team and the league. Her mere presence alone has already earned the Chiefs $331.5 million, one expert claimed in February.
Reid, for his part, has previously commented on the romance between Travis and Swift.
“She’s great,” he said of Swift in March. “I’m glad they’re happy.”
