Singer Lee Lewis talks about George Michael, Janet Jackson and why Luther Vandross is the ultimate “singer of singers”

Queer singer Lee Lewis has released his debut EP Something burning earlier this year. The seven-song collection draws on pop, soul and R&B, exploring a wide range of moods and emotions, tackling themes such as heartbreak and abuse, as well as resilience, pride and self-discovery.

In a recent interview with Ebony, the 29-year-old said: “My music is truly my freest self. It is not only honest in the stories and experiences I tell, but also in my voice and singing. It is the combination of my musical influences, my past, my family, my singing, my traumas, joys and stories presented together in the music. I have never felt so unified and free.”

Queerty caught up with Lee for our Top 10 Tracks column, where we ask our favorite queer musicians about the music that inspires them. Here’s what he had to say…

Which song is currently playing on repeat in your head:

“Weird” by Kaytranada and Durand Bernarr. This song is soooo funky and sexy. And they’re both queer artists! And Black! Durand’s amazing vocals and Kaytra’s usual amazing performance. It’s a hit!

Current favorite album by a queer artist:

My current favorite queer artist is clearly and without a doubt Charlotte Day Wilson’s Cyan-Blue. Her vocals, layering, production and storytelling are always top notch. Homegirl inspires me a lot. She’s the queen!

The first big concert you ever attended and what you remember most:

If I remember correctly, it was Lil Bow Wowages ago haha. I was there with my cousins. I had on a cute little Rocawear outfit. One of us has the photos. I’ll have to share them soon.

Favorite song (or album) when you want to feel empowered:

100% Anti from Rihanna. Rih is my girl. I’ve been in the Navy since 7th or 8th grade. She’s on this album. “Needed Me.” “Sex with Me.” “Work.” “Kiss It Better.” It’s about empowerment!

The best music video of all time and why:

I have to name two… “Put your hands where my eyes can see” by Busta Rhymes And “If” by Janet Jackson. Busta and Hype Williams are an unbeatable duo. The camera work, the outfits, the performance were on point. And then of course Janet brings her usual disgusting choreography. One day I want to do a choreography! One day!

The first album you ever bought and what effect it had on you:

The first album I bought was justice self-titled album. All the kids at school were playing it. It was my first venture into electronic music. And since then I’ve wanted to do some songs in that area. I would die to be featured on a Justice track.

Best cover song by a queer artist and why:

Simply! GeorgeMichael cover Stevie Wonders “You will not go if I go. How could you not love this cover? It really captured the heartbreaking feeling of the song and Stevie’s lyrics. They’re both legends!

Favorite song (or album) when you want to relax:

I’m sorry, but here are two more answer answers for you! “Hung Up” by Madonna. It’s electric. ABBA sample. Absolutely iconic track. And then of course I have to give it Beyoncé’s “Virgo’s Groove”.” singing for days. Beyoncé doing Beyoncé and I’m trying too haha. Plus I’m a virgin. ♍

Dreamy queer music collaboration (alive or dead):

Choosing just one answer here is just crazy! So I’ll give two (again). Sam Smith And Janelle Monae. Sam, because we would devour some vocals together. In The lonely hour is this album. And Janelle, because they are brilliantly creative. And so proud to be black! Plus they are sci-fi geeks like me.

Queer artist who has had the biggest influence on your work and why:

Probably Luther Vandross. He is the singer of singers. One of the best voices of all time. I have studied his runs and ornaments. He really is the blueprint of the voice!
