The Backyard BBQ Series from Meanwhile Brewing Co.

The Backyard BBQ Series from Meanwhile Brewing Co.

To get people out of their homes in this heat, you need a very special, enticing attraction – and a series of special Backyard BBQ events is, in my opinion, just that attraction.

Austin, Texas-based Uptown Sports Club and Meanwhile Brewing Co. have announced an amazing four-part summer backyard barbecue series that will bring together chefs, brewmasters and live music to provide a relaxed, approachable culinary experience reminiscent of the classic summer party. The limited series will take place on August 2, 23, September 6 and September 20, with the venue rotating between the two dates. The mood of the poster says it all:

Backyard BBQ Series

“Community is everything to us at Uptown and we’re thrilled to be partnering with our friends at Meanwhile Brewing Co. and such talented chefs to bring this backyard barbecue series to life,” says Aaron Franklin, co-owner of Uptown Sports Club. “We want to bring the people of Austin closer together through good food, good beer and good music and we can’t wait to do just that.”

Tickets for this Craft Beer Marketing Idea of the Week are $39 per person and can be purchased here. Each ticket includes two drinks (alcoholic or non-alcoholic), two food items, and one dessert from Bésame and Tiny Pies. Additional food and drink tickets can be purchased on-site.

Beer from the grill in the garden

Meanwhile, Brewing Co. will also release a limited canned edition of their Custom Lager – a one-of-a-kind beer brewed specifically for Uptown that will be served on tap when it opens in March 2023. The American Premium Lager offers a melody of lemon, dough and spices and pairs well with Uptown classics like gumbo, shrimp po’boys and oysters on the half shell.

BBQ talent

The series presents unique, off-menu bites featuring a range of flavours from renowned local culinary talent, including:

  • Franklin, the legendary grill master behind Uptown Sports Club and Franklin Barbecue;
  • Pitmaster Evan Leroy of Leroy & Lewis Barbecue, who recently announced the release of his cookbook “New School Barbecue,” due out in 2026;
  • Davis Tuner of the coastal food truck Huckleberry;
  • and chef Fiore Tedesco from the Italian restaurant L’Oca d’Oro and the Pizzeria Bambino in the neighborhood.

The Uptown Sports Club team will also be providing additional grilled food and cold dishes at all four events. Desserts will be provided by the Bésame food truck, which makes homemade ice cream, and the Tiny Pies bakery.

Additionally, each event features live music from local bands. Meanwhile guests can enjoy the beer garden and dog-friendly outdoor event space. Guests of Uptown Sports Club, whose roots as a neighborhood watering hole date back to 1893, can enjoy the action of East Sixth Street from the dining room or rear patio of the historic building.

“We’ve always wanted to make Meanwhile Brewing Co. a place where the community can come together to relax and enjoy each other’s company, and we’re happy to be able to share that feeling with Uptown Sports Club,” says Meanwhile founder Will Jaquiss. “We’re excited to be able to serve Custom Lager, our beer brewed specifically for Uptown Sports and summer, along with great food prepared by truly talented chefs.”
