How Charlize Theron and Anya Taylor-Joy are connected by their roles in ‘Furiosa’; READ

Charlize Theron and Anya Taylor-Joy have no ill feelings for each other, despite initial speculation after Taylor-Joy took over Theron’s role in the Mad Max franchise. While the media initially suspected a rift between the stars, the Oscar winner has now clarified their relationship.

In a recent interview, Theron praised her younger colleague and revealed that the two had been planning to get in touch since the production of “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.”

Charlize Theron and Anya Taylor-Joy have interesting Furiosa plans

Charlize Theron, 48, was initially torn when she decided not to reprise her role as Furiosa, a character she made famous in the Mad Max prequel. But she eventually agreed to Anya Taylor-Joy’s casting and developed a bond with the young actress. Theron played the older version of Imperator Furiosa in Fury Road (2015).

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter on Monday, July 14, the South African actress explained that she and Anya Taylor-Joy, 28, wanted to share their personal experiences playing the role of Furiosa, but it was difficult due to time constraints.

“We keep running into each other and in places where we don’t have time to really talk to each other, so we’re constantly like, ‘Oh my God, okay, let’s get together!’ And then life takes over. But it will happen when it’s right,” Theron told the outlet.

The “Atomic Blonde” star also hinted that if they get the chance to reconnect, they might “make a comedy out of” their shared experiences playing Furiosa.

The 2024 prequel “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” starring Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth, premiered in May and Theron admitted it was a “beautiful film.”

How did Charlize Theron react to not being in “Furiosa”?

Shortly after learning that Anya Taylor-Joy, the star of The Queen’s Gambit, was cast in the role in 2020, Charlize Theron was disappointed. She said it was “a little heartbreaking” because of her fondness for Furiosa and had hoped to reprise the role sooner or later, according to an interview with The Hollywood Reporter (THR) in 2020.

While a brief cameo might have appeased the Golden Globe winner, George Miller, creator of the Mad Max series, probably felt it would be best to continue with just Anya Taylor-Joy.

Regardless, Theron had great respect for her character’s torchbearer, Taylor-Joy, and made it clear that she was not mad because, according to a 2022 THR report, “one of the greatest… actresses” took on the role she inspired.

Taylor-Joy was aware of the responsibility of doing Furiosa justice and strove to meet the standards of her boss, Theron, who spoke of having to “fiercely protect” the character.

Director George Miller originally planned to cast Charlize Theron in the role of the younger version of Furiosa in the prequel, using rejuvenation VFX technology, but later decided to go with a younger actor instead.

Miller, who created the Mad Max series in 1979, was keen to explore the origin stories of two central characters after the great reception of Fury Road: Imperator Furiosa and Tom Hardy’s Max Rockatansky aka Mad Max.

Now, with the release of Furiosa in 2024, the Mad Max series is moving toward another prequel, The Wasteland, which tells the origin story of Max Rockatansky.
