Let’s enjoy the summer – The Voice

GREETINGS TO OUR CITY: Summer is far from over in our city. Swimming, boating, music in the park, farmer’s market, festivals, steak outs, triathlon, VBS, walks in Burke Park to see the bricks/pavers, dinner at the many restaurants or a shopping spree. You never have to drive out of town. We have it all here. So come celebrate life in our city and in Anchor Bay.

JULY 19 VFW POST 7573 STEAK-OUT: Grill your own New York strip steak over hot coals and enjoy fellowship in the Cove, including baked potatoes, salad, dinner rolls and dessert. Fee is $18 per person between 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. Post 7573 is located at 35011 23 Mile in Our Town.

JULY 23-25 ​​VBS AT TWO LOCAL CHURCHES: The two oldest churches in Our Town, standing on the same site since the 1860s, have backyards close to each other. First Congregational Church, 36223 Alfred corner Base, 586-725-0909, and St. John’s Lutheran Church, 51161 Maria corner Green, 586-725-6801, are happy to accept your children’s registration for Vacation Bible School this summer. Youth ages 3-6 will enjoy Bible stories, games, singing with Mrs. C, snacks and learn about a program called Camp Firelight, a summer camp, “An Adventure with God,” that begins at 9 a.m. each day. JULY 27: COAST GUARD WATERCRAFT SAFETY COURSE: The course will be held from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Ira Township Hall, 7085 Meldrum. Pre-registration is required for administrative purposes. Call Anna at 586-339-3969 to register or email [email protected]. Note: A certificate will be issued upon completion of the course. In addition, an on-site vessel safety inspection will be available after the course.

JULY 28TH SERVICE AT GRACE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH: Free admission, beginning at 6 p.m. an exciting and dynamic family trio, Westward Road, will provide entertainment with gospel and modern worship music. A donation of love is gratefully accepted. Refreshments will be provided. The church is located at 49655 Jefferson, Chesterfield. Come with friends and enjoy this service. JULY 29-AUGUST 2: Christ, the King Lutheran Church, 29920 23 Mile, Chesterfield, invites youth ages 3 through 7 to attend vacation Bible school sessions daily from 9:30 a.m. to noon. To register children, please call or text Sandy at 810-335-1442. The program at the church is called “WildLIVE, Showing the Character of Christ.” Bible stories, puppet shows, crafts, games, bounce houses, outdoor activities, singing and snacks will mark the days.

DON’T MISS MUSIC IN THE PARK: Part of the music concert series, performances will be held from 7:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at Burke Park on Front Street. Tonight, Joey Vee performs, next Wednesday, July 24, Mr. Smith, and July 31, Big Poppa and the Machine. There will be four shows later in August and two in September, all on Wednesdays.

CASINO TRIP JULY 30: Call Shirley at 586-531-1934 and head to Battle Creek to Firekeepers Casino with friends. Be in the Lowes parking lot, 27990 23 Mile, Chesterfield, by 7:45 a.m. for an 8:00 a.m. departure. The fee is $50 per person and includes bus transportation to Battle Creek, tip for the driver, a small snack, bottled water and a movie during the trip. Note: The casino offers a $5 meal coupon and $20 for card games. When you reach 55 points, stop by the kiosk and you might be able to play another $10. Arrival home is around 7:30 p.m. Good luck!

AUGUST 8-10: Antique Flea Market on the Trail: Imagine your trip starting in Michigan’s “Tip of the Thumb,” you’ll find flea markets on both sides of M-25 to Port Huron, then head to our city’s city hall grounds on M-29, again with flea markets on both sides of the road. The local flea market, run by the New Baltimore Lions Club, is held daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. To donate items (except clothing) to the Lions Flea Market, bring items (except clothing) to one of two locations: 51145 Clay or 53530 Grace, near Washington. Along the trail, the flea markets will be unique and interesting because you can have conversations with the vendors, meet or make new friends, and maybe find some great bargains too. A GOOD SHEPHERD LUTHERAN CHURCH FUNDRAISER ON SEPTEMBER 21: A scrapbooking “event,” participants must register by August 21 by calling 586-703-5983 or emailing [email protected]. Early bird fee is $25, after that it is $30. All fees are refundable, all proceeds go to the church. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., enjoy crafts, lunch, dessert, refreshments, vendors, a basket party and prizes. The grand prize is a weekend at the Four Seasons Inn in Emmet.

SAVE THE DATE, SEPTEMBER 22: Ira Township’s “PUPTEMBER” event will be held from 1-3 p.m. at Ira Township Park, Meldrum Entrance or Short Cut Entrance. Bring your dogs and enjoy time with other pet owners. Contact [email protected] to register to attend.

NHHS ALUMNI, SAVE THE DATE, OCTOBER 5: An alert to New Haven High School alumni is information about the annual dinner in 2024 at Zuccaro’s Banquets & Catering in Gratiot, Chesterfield. The years 1974 and 1999 will be celebrated as former graduates commemorate 50 and 25 years at New Haven High School. A fundraiser for the scholarship fund. ORDER A BRICK/PAVER NOW: Come to New Baltimore City Hall or the MacDonald Public Library to get a form to indicate the words you would like engraved on the brick/paver. The $125 per brick will be used to maintain the bricks already in the ground and to keep the pole stable that will hold the 30-by-60-foot flag. Come to Burke Park and see the massive project the New Baltimore Lions Club, led by Project Manager Ron Earle, undertook when they erected the pole and flag and dedicated them on October 15, 2016.

Remember to donate to the St. Mary’s food pantry: Open Mondays and Wednesdays from 11:30am to 1:30pm. Needed: Sloppy Joe mix, granola bars, soap, saltine crackers, egg noodles, juice, and for babies, diapers sizes 4, 5 and 6 and wipes. Thank you for your kindness.

BEVERAGE CONTAINER DONATIONS ARE STILL OFFERED: On Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon, you can bring clean, empty bottles and cans to Premier Mall and Premier Health Club in Chesterfield. A member of the New Baltimore Lions Club will be there with a pickup truck to accept your generous donations. All funds raised will benefit Leaders Dog for the Blind in Rochester and enable blind children to attend summer camp there.

VFW NATIONAL BELL RINGERS DAY, JULY 4: At noon, at VFW Post 7573, 35011 23 Mile, a line of people held a long rope tied to the bell on the grounds and rang it 13 times. Why 13 times? On July 4, 1983, President John F. Kennedy declared the annual holiday “National Bell Ringers Day.” At 2 p.m., bells will be rung 13 times to represent the 13 original colonies that fought for freedom and independence in 1776. The colonies and the year they became part of New England are: Virginia, 1607; Massachusetts, 1620; New Hampshire, 1623; Maryland, 1632; Connecticut, 1636; Rhode Island, 1636; Delaware, 1638; North Carolina, 1663; South Carolina, 1663; New York, 1664; New Jersey, 1665; Pennsylvania, 1681; and Georgia, 1732.
