These two years will also serve to make Rome and Italy a city and a country that can once again show its tradition of hospitality at its best.

…but this was the moment when the Pope first invited young people to make a pilgrimage to Rome in 2025.

POPE FRANCIS

I invite young people from all over the world to come to Rome in 2025 to celebrate together the Jubilee of Youth.

And so the Italian authorities got to work and developed an action plan to prepare the entire city for this international meeting.

This is a moment of extraordinary importance which places a great responsibility on us as the Italian State and as the City of Rome to support and promote this event with all our commitment and strength.

With a budget of nearly $2 billion, the city of Rome launched a redevelopment plan with a total of 335 projects ranging from major construction sites to smaller road improvements.

There are significant and open works planned, but as I said, they are practical projects. The tunnel under Piazza Pia and the modernization of the Gregorio VII tunnel. There are also significant works from a reception point of view.

These images show the area around the Vatican in August 2023. Bulldozers and closed roads are a common sight throughout the city and will impact tourists visiting the Eternal City in the months leading up to the anniversary.

The city council of Rome claims that it is breaking a record in terms of time and that everything will be finished by 2025.

Normally, in this city, and indeed throughout Italy, people talk about how it takes years to complete work. In these projects, however, we managed to open the construction site in just a few months and now have a schedule that allows us to plan for completion on time – before the anniversary.

But Rome still faces several challenges by 2025. First, the planned construction work must be completed and the infrastructure for pilgrims in the Italian capital must be created.

In addition, the city must address the current situation in the tourism sector, where many downtown apartments are being converted into short-term apartments, many of them without legal regulations – which will likely affect both hotels and Rome’s residents themselves.

Rome must also consider the city’s security, especially at strategic points such as train stations, subways and airports, all in view of the estimated 50 million pilgrims who will pass through Rome in 2025.
