Oakland County singer says she was drunk during much-criticized performance of national anthem

SOUTHFIELD, Michigan. – The Oakland County singer who faced criticism after an odd performance of the national anthem said she was drunk at the time of the performance.

Ingrid Andress, a country music star born in Southfield, sang the Star-Spangled Banner before the MLB Home Run Derby on Monday night in Texas.

To say her performance was poorly received would be an understatement. It was pretty much the only thing anyone talked about on social media all night.

Shortly after 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Andress issued a statement on X and Instagram.

“I’m not kidding you, I was drunk last night,” she wrote. “I’m checking myself into a clinic today to get the help I need. That’s not how I was last night. I apologize to MLB, all the fans and this country I love so much for that performance. I’ll let you all know how rehab is, I hear it’s super fun.”

Andress has been nominated for four Grammy Awards and several of her songs have landed on the top 100 lists. On her Instagram profile, she describes herself as a “four-time Grammy loser.”

Andress was born in Southfield but grew up in Colorado and now lives in Nashville. Her father, Brad Andress, previously worked as a strength coach for the Detroit Tigers and the University of Michigan baseball team.
