Flower farms in Michigan offer fresh blooms for colorful bouquets

Flowers are our way of expressing gratitude, love, congratulations and condolences.

Flower farmers across Michigan offer a wide variety of flowers. Farms offer many ways to purchase flowers – from selling bouquets in stores and farmers markets to offering flower subscriptions to allowing visitors to pick flowers from bright fields.

Here are eight Michigan farms where you can buy locally grown flowers.

The flower project

In Ferndale, Michael Fraley and his partner, Brent Grant, grow a wide variety of flowers on their double lot — and even in part of a neighbor’s garden — that they use in colorful bouquets they sell at local farmers markets in Royal Oak, Birmingham and Grosse Pointe. “Our goal is to give you flowers just before they hit their prime so they’re actually on your table in full bloom and last longer,” Fraley said. He said the company also takes special orders and hosts events. For more information, follow The Flower Project on Instagram at @the_flower_projectmi or visit their Facebook page.

Chacko Farms

Chacko Farms is a passion project for owners Rachel Chacko and Caitlin Scroggins, who started the flower farm on Chacko’s parents’ property in Plymouth and opened it to the public. The pick-your-own operation is funded by donations. Visitors can schedule a visit on the farm’s website and then have access to the supplies they need once they’re at the farm, Chacko said. Chacko Farms is located at 9384 Brookville Road in Plymouth. For more information or to schedule a visit, visit www.chackofarms.com.

DeBucks Family Farm

DeBuck’s Family Farm in Belleville hosts its Sunflower Festival in August, where visitors have the opportunity to pick their own bouquets and enjoy other attractions, including carriage rides and a giant slide, the farm’s website says. Eric DeBuck, who runs the farm with his brother, said they have nearly 10 acres of sunflowers. The farm hosts other festivals throughout the year. DeBuck said the farm is only open to the public during the festivals. The Sunflower Festival is Aug. 9-25. DeBuck’s Family Farm is located at 50240 Martz Road in Belleville. Griffin said she recently acquired two more lots to continue expanding. She said visitors can purchase bouquets during the market she hosts on Saturdays during the summer.
