Book “Grandfather’s Whispers” by Stacy Elliot

Book “Grandfather’s Whispers” by Stacy Elliot

A Port Huron resident will publish her first novel this August.

Stacy Elliott wrote and self-published her first book, Grandfather’s Whispers, over a period of 14 years. She was inspired to write the book after losing her grandfather at age 21. She began writing a memoir about him to keep his memory alive for her younger family members, but also because her own memories of him were fading.

As she was writing, she found that adding details that weren’t real, including magical realism, made the book more interesting as fiction than as a memoir. Some events in the book are also inspired by true events from Elliott’s memories of her grandfather.

“By combining that magical realism with adult literary themes, it became a better story,” Elliott said. “I was able to capture the spirit of my grandfather through all of that, which was my goal from the beginning.”

Grandfather’s Whispers is about a 17-year-old girl on the verge of adulthood going through a medical crisis. She meets her grandfather in the ethereal realm, where the soul resides and magic thrives.

The book is available for pre-order at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Bam Books-a-Million, Bookshop.org, and Walmart. You can also pre-order directly from Elliott’s website at www.stacynelliott.com.

“Grandfather’s Whispers” will be available on August 1st.

Elliott will hold a book signing on August 22 at 4 p.m. at the Donald E. Dodge Auditorium, 200 Grand River Ave. In addition to the book signing, there will be refreshments, a reading of excerpts by actor Michael O’Hair and a question-and-answer session with Elliott.

The event is free, but due to limited seating, registration is required. To register, visit www.stclairlibrary.org/events.

Elliott’s family knew she was writing the book, and some received advance copies to provide feedback. Elliott said her family liked the book, and some asked other family members which events in the book were based on real life.

Elliott said other readers of the pre-release copy gave it positive reviews, with some saying it could one day become a good movie.

“People told me they couldn’t put the book down,” she said.

Elliott said she is currently working on a five-part modern fantasy book series. She said the entire series is already planned, with the first book finished and the second partially completed.
