Meteor could be responsible for loud bang in NYC

Could a meteorite have caused the loud bang heard in parts of New York City and northern New Jersey?

New York City officials began investigating reports of a loud noise heard in Staten Island, Brooklyn and Queens on Tuesday morning. Similar reports were received in New Jersey.

The New York Department of Emergency Management received an update from NASA, which estimated that a meteor entered the atmosphere early Tuesday and disintegrated over the New York City metropolitan area.

Preliminary analysis suggests that the meteorite passed over the Statue of Liberty before breaking up high above Midtown Manhattan. No meteorites were produced in the event.
