The death toll from rainstorms and floods in Afghanistan’s eastern Nangarhar province has risen to 40 and the number of injured has reached 347, the country’s health ministry reported on Tuesday.

According to ministry spokesman Sharafat Zaman Amarkhil, medical professionals have been dispatched to the affected areas to treat the injured. According to the Xinhua news agency, the number of casualties is expected to continue to rise.

The sudden natural disaster occurred on Monday afternoon and caused many deaths and financial losses in the provincial capital Jalalabad, Sukh Rod district and the adjacent areas of the province bordering Pakistan.

Similarly, five people were killed on Monday morning when flash floods washed away large parts of the eastern Afghan province of Kunar.

Heavy rains and floods have killed more than 400 people and left thousands homeless in the war-torn country since May.
