The story behind the break-in at Taylor’s cabin

MEROM, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – As staff at Merom Camp and Retreat Center were doing their routine inspection of all the cabins, they noticed something was wrong with Taylor’s cabin.

It turned out that this cabin had been broken into and hot water was leaking from the shower all the time. The center’s executive director, David Grim, said this had caused mold to grow on the ceiling, leading to the cabin being closed indefinitely.

“We immediately turned off the water and the more we thought about it, the more we realized that this could have been going on for two days,” he said. “I quickly checked all the doors and saw that the back door was broken.”

However, Grim believes that this person had no evil intentions.

“We have been happy to serve our local community in the past by opening our campus to those in need,” he said. “More than likely, that person was in need, and we wish they had reached out to us in a way that would have allowed us to properly help them.”

He said this had a significant impact on day-to-day operations at the camp.

“We are in the middle of our busiest and biggest camping season and when one cabin was out of service, we had to frantically figure out where to put everyone,” he said.
Fortunately, the municipality of Merom came to the rescue by donating money to speed up the restoration work on the hut.

“I really want everyone to know that we are going through all this right now and it has been a surprise to us. You never know when hard times can hit. But I know that in a city like ours, people stick together. And that’s what makes this kind of work so gratifying,” he said.
