Dolly Parton’s first song was written before she could even write: “I was about 5 years old”

She’s been writing songs since she was a little kid… even before she could actually write them down.

Songwriting is the heart and soul of country music, and no one knows that better than Dolly PartonFrom her megahits like “I Will Always Love You” to her more comedic work with songs like “Dumb Blonde” or the memories of her native Tennessee in “Tennessee Homesick Blues,” Dolly Parton can write about anything.

While some believe she became that way while learning the ropes of the music industry, Parton was born with the ability to write a song about anything. Wire.com In an interview, Parton recalled piecing together her first song before she could even begin writing, but she remembers every single word.

“What was Dolly Parton’s first song? Well, the first song actually came before I started writing. It came before I could write it down.

I was about five years old and had a little corn doll that Mom made for me. I called her “Tiny Tassel Top” because she had corn tassels for hair. So I wrote a little song…

‘Small top with tiny tassel,
I love you so much
Hope you never leave
I want you to stay…’

Tada! But I started writing songs as a child. And my first record was called ‘Puppy Love’ when I was ten years old.”

If that doesn’t mean she was destined to be a star, I don’t know what does. And I have to admit, it also shows how sharp Parton’s mind is that she remembers a song she composed at the tender age of 5. I can barely remember what day of the week it is now.

Even if the silly song at 5 doesn’t really define her career, it shows that her brain was constantly occupied with rhymes and rhythms. A true songwriter through and through.
