Sarasota County Commission rejects arts funding for three popular organizations

After earlier rejections of a citizen panel’s recommendations on social services and mental health funding, the Sarasota County Commission approved spending $2.1 million of the city’s tourist tax on 35 arts and cultural programs, but only after cutting funds for the popular “Embracing Our Differences” outdoor exhibit and chalk festival, as well as local radio station WSLR/Fogartyville Community Arts and Media Center.

And another artistic decision is still to come.

Medical cannabis advocate Catherine Jordan dies at her Manatee County home on July 4

Medical cannabis advocate Catherine E. Jordan died July 4 at the age of 74 at her home in Parrish.

Jordan’s decades-long commitment is a key reason why Florida residents can legally smoke cannabis for medicinal purposes. News of her death was released by the Florida Cannabis Action Network, a statewide nonprofit organization working to end cannabis prohibition.
