Last night, another round of heavy rains in severe storms hit far southern Michigan. The overnight rain combined with several other heavy rains to give some areas of southern Michigan very high monthly rainfall totals. Here’s a close look at last night’s rainfall and the last month’s.
Last night’s rain map shows that the heaviest rain occurred in a 2- to 3-inch-wide strip along I-94 and in extreme southern Michigan.

When we add up all the thunderstorms, the rainfall totals for the past month look very wet. Monthly rainfall amounts vary greatly in Michigan. The purple shaded areas below pumped 10 to 15 inches of rain out of the rain gauge last month. The yellow areas were not really dry, but are within the average 30-day rainfall amounts for this time of year. The yellow areas are around 3 to 4 inches last month.
How about some closer looks at the southwest and southeast of Lower? We can now see a small area south of Portage and Kalamazoo that received over 15 inches of rain last month. This location is the wettest area in Michigan last month.
Across southeastern Lower Michigan, rainfall amounts will be over 5 inches in most locations, with over 10 inches in the purple areas.
There has certainly been a lot of rain compared to normal amounts for a warm month. Only a few small areas of Michigan have rainfall amounts that are within the normal range for mid-June to mid-July.
