President Thomas of Morehouse College announces his resignation

Morehouse College announced the resignation of Dr. David A. Thomas as president, effective June 30, 2025.

“Record-breaking” describes Thomas’ tenure at the college.

His innovative and impactful work has brought him international attention and partnerships with several notable institutions, companies, and individuals; the number of applications from high-performing students has increased to an all-time high; major investments in infrastructure have been completed or are underway; and during his seven years in office, more funds have been raised by any president in Morehouse’s 157-year history.

His vision is based on more than 30 years of experience in higher education, and his tenure has positioned Morehouse to have an even greater impact in the 21st century.

After a period of rest, travel and time with his family, he will join Morehouse’s faculty and help complete the $500 million capital campaign, which is well past the halfway mark since its launch in fall 2021.

“In my inaugural address, I promised to do my best for Morehouse, and I have gotten up every day since then to fulfill that promise,” Thomas said. “Serving as president of Morehouse has been the honor of my life.”

The best time for a leadership change is when an institution is strong and the building blocks are in place to realize its vision, he said. Thomas said he believes now is the right time and new leadership with fresh eyes, energy and perspective can address challenges and discover new opportunities.

Since 2018, Morehouse has transitioned from structural deficits to funding significant campus projects, improving its technology infrastructure, and paying its employees competitively.

Guided by a strategic plan, significant investments have been made in the physical infrastructure of the campus, including the renovation of the Martin Luther King Jr. International Chapel, the BT Harvey Stadium football field, the Edwin C. Moses track and field facility, and several classrooms, laboratories and lecture halls on campus.

This month, the college will begin construction on a new residence hall, and a new student center will follow in the next few years, ushering in a new era of on-campus living.

The strategic motto of “Morehouse Beyond Borders” includes groundbreaking achievements such as the launch of the globally accessible Morehouse Online Bachelor’s Degree Program, leadership in virtual reality as an educational tool, the creation of the Center for Black Entrepreneurship with the Black Economic Alliance and Spelman College, the establishment of the Black Men’s Research Institute, and the Andrew Young Center for Global Leadership’s Higher Education in Prisons program.

Willie Woods, chairman of the Morehouse College Board of Trustees, expressed his gratitude for Thomas’ leadership.

“It has been a privilege to work with and stand alongside David. His commitment to the improvement and excellence of Morehouse – my alma mater – has been unwavering. I deeply value his courageous leadership and contributions and am excited to see what his senior year brings,” Woods said.

The college has launched a nationwide search for its 13th president, led by trustee and alumnus Fred Humphries, who will chair the presidential search committee currently being assembled.

“I will forever support Morehouse in its pursuit of excellence and fulfilling its mission. I look forward to the upcoming school year and making it the best of my tenure,” Thomas said.
