Another Netflix Original series from Germany is leaving Netflix: the eight-episode limited series Perfume (Perfume)with August Diehl, Friederike Becht, Roxane Duran, Christian Friedel, Ken Duken and Carlotta von Falkenhayn.

The series was created by Eva Kranenburg, Philipp Kadelbach and Oliver Berben and produced by Constantin Film, the same production company behind resident Evil, Firedrake, the Silver DragonAnd The silenceas well as upcoming titles such as Extraterritorial And Murder mindfully.

The plot revolves around the murder of a boarding school singer that is being investigated, and her classmates are among the suspects. Be warned if you’re expecting a standard European crime thriller: it’s not. It’s a little dark and, in fact, a little hotter.

Although the show is labeled as a Netflix Original in all territories except Germany, it actually falls under the exclusive distribution umbrella, meaning Netflix does not own the rights to the series forever.

The show was first broadcast on ZDFneo before being released worldwide on Netflix on December 21, 2018. Netflix presents the show with numerous dubbing and subtitle options.

A new removal notice on the Netflix page for the series states that the series is scheduled to end on August 15, 2024. The “Last day to watch” notice states that you have until August 14 to finish watching the series.

Should you Perfume a watch before it leaves?

Decider wasn’t a huge fan of the series when it came out. Joel Keller gave the series a SKIP rating and suggested that you should only watch it “unless you like bloody and macabre shows. If there was a better story, we could forgive Perfume’s unnecessaryness, but judging by the first episode, shock seems to be the priority.”

Although they weren’t fans, the series fared far better, receiving a solid 7.0 rating on IMDb at the time of release.

Could the license for the series be renewed on Netflix (not for season 2)? This seems unlikely, as the series has not been a huge success. Last year, the series was watched for 8.4 million hours worldwide, which equates to 1.4 million views.

The series joins the dozens of Netflix original films and series that have left the service in recent years. In 2024 alone, we have seen another German series, Babylon Berlin, on a new streaming service, as well as other titles such as The square, Medici, Million Pound MenuAnd The Vato.
