CHARLOTTE, NC — NASCAR Cup Series driver Daniel Suarez will compete in the sanctioning body’s Brasil Series Special Edition tournament next month, which runs parallel to the main competition in Brazil.

The Cup Series will take a two-week break during the Summer Olympics in Paris. Suarez — who is 17th in the Cup points and clinched a playoff spot with a thrilling win at Atlanta Motor Speedway in February — will drive a Chevy Camaro Aug. 2-4 at Autódromo José Carlos Pace, better known as Interlagos, a news release said Tuesday.

The 32-year-old driver from Monterrey (Mexico) will celebrate his wedding to Julia Piquet in Brazil and take part in a race in São Paulo before returning to the USA, the press release added.

The 2016 Xfinity Series champion competed in a similar international event earlier this year, the NASCAR Mexico Series race at the LA Coliseum, where he earned his first win since 2014. He was excited for the chance to compete in and support the series during the Cup break, saying he hopes to have fun while attracting attention outside of Brazil.

“This is not only an opportunity to try something new,” Suarez added. “Since my fiancée’s family has roots in Brazil, it also gives me the chance to race in a place she calls home.”

The format of the special edition differs from the main championship in that it features qualifying and a race on Saturday, followed by two races on Sunday. Qualifying determines the starting order for the first two races, with the average results of these races determining the starting order for the final race.

Suarez holds dual citizenship after taking an oath to become a U.S. citizen last month.
