Tom Wyner, voice actor of Cowboy Bebop and Digimon, dies at the age of 77

Tom Wyner, an English-American voice actor, producer, writer and director, has died at the age of 77. Wyner was best known for his numerous roles in cult anime series, such as Cowboy Bebop, Digimon, Ghost in the Shell and more.




Mobile Monicker, Wyner’s agency, confirmed the actor’s death on social media platform X (formerly Twitter). Wyner’s first anime role, which was credited as the Lupin the 3rd Part II Anime television series. He also appeared in Lupin III – The Castle of Cagliostroone of the most famous animated films of Lupin the Third Franchise, directed by Hayao Miyazaki of Studio Ghibli. Wyner’s breakthrough role, however, was in the 1985 film Robotech Anime series as Jonathan Wolfe.


Among the countless characters Wyner played in his nearly 50-year career, the villain roles in both animation and live-action became some of the actor’s most memorable performances. Wyner played nearly 30 villains in the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and wrote “Green with Evil – Part III; The Rescue” and “Calamity Kimberly”. He also played the cursed doll Sid in Buffy the Vampire SlayerM. Bison in the Animaze dubbing of Street Fighter II Vthe puppeteer in the film “The 1995 Ghost in the Shell Movie, Devimon in Digimon Adventure and Rengie in Cowboy Bebop: The Movie (also known as Cowboy Bebop: Knocking on Heaven’s Door).

In addition to his voice acting work, Wyner was an ADR director and story editor with over 20 years of experience at Saban Entertainment before moving into audiobook narration. “Tom absolutely loved the opportunity to meet his fans, share his own passions with them and inspire them to chase their dreams,” said Mobile Monicker. “He put his heart and soul into every encounter and left a lasting impression on everyone whose path crossed his. His beautiful and kindred spirit will forever hold a special place in our hearts.”


Voice actress Wendee Lee, who plays Faye Valentine in Cowboy BebopWyner also paid her respects on her social media account X. “The loss of voice actor Tom Weiner is a sad moment,” Lee said. “I worked with Tom from the beginning. He was incredibly talented, confident, intelligent, funny, restless, a real challenge at times – he loved animals, cooking and food. I send healing light to all who knew and loved him. Farewell, friend.”
