Monkey (Fred Tatasciore) and Bryce (Jason Sudeikis) have stuck together as a murderous duo through thick and thin, but a secret plot by an ancient order of villains threatens everything they hold dear. As Bryce grows closer to his daughter Iris (Cristin Milioti) and begins to confront his past, Monkey feels more lost than ever. Being a killer of killers doesn’t give him the meaning he’s been looking for. Meanwhile, Bryce gains powers and abilities from his ghostly form. Enemies old and new hunt Bryce and Monkey as they try to keep their unusual relationship going.

Hit-Monkey Season 2 is better than Season 1

While Marvel animations have gone through a variety of different eras – be it What if…? or Spider-Man and his incredible friendsPunch Monkey feels like it’s in a category all its own, its action and comedy coming from a completely different sphere of influence. But if Deadpool is the merc with the big mouth, Hit-Monkey is the merc without a mission. The raunchy nature of the show lends itself to profanity, but the main character’s silence gives us insight into his trauma and motivation.

Punch Monkey
In Season 2, characters appear out of nowhere and it feels like they’ve always been there.

Punch Monkey Season 2 takes a much deeper look at the psychology of the relationship between Monkey and Bryce. Their symbiotic relationship is similar to Venom’s, but there are stronger boundaries between Monkey and Bryce. All of this leads to a season that is clearly better than the last.

Silver Samurai and Lady Bullseye were in the first season, but the Samurai and Lady Bullseye in Season 2 have a lot more to offer in terms of character development. Punch Monkey Season 2 manages to make characters appear out of nowhere and make them feel like they’ve always been there. Our tolerance for this character may vary, but his place in the show’s world is undeniable.

The comedy of the second season of Hit-Monkey is not well received

Monkey flies through the air and screams while holding his sword in Hit-Monkey Season 2

The main problem with Punch Monkey Unfortunately, everything rests on the shoulders of the comedy. Even with newcomers like Leslie Jones (Top Five) as a handler, the Hulu show has never managed to come out of its shell or be original with its comedy. Everything Bryce says feels like something from the early days of Saturday Night Liveor the laziest version of Sudeikis’ improvisation. The real tragedy is that Punch Monkey would be great if it was a pure action drama series.

The sci-fi elements of Punch Monkey are also a bit higher than in season 1. Giant red tigers, mind manipulation and a lot of creepy relics and weapons make for crazy fight scenes. Fans will be delighted by the sheer amount of hand-to-hand combat and magic that this season has to offer. In the three years since the first release Punch Monkey has worked to become stronger, and the effort has paid off. Despite the lack of genuine humor, this season’s successes prove that the animated series has much more to offer.

Punch Monkey is never funny and unfortunately, if the series had been more open with its comedy, it would have attracted a larger audience that would have enjoyed and appreciated the animation more. That being said, Punch Monkey is still a unicorn for Marvel as the only true adult animated series, and it’s fortunate that the series is on Hulu rather than Disney+, which would have hurt its irreverent, R-rated humor.

Season 2 is full of samurai battles and magic, which Punch Monkey a little more action than season 1. But it is the storyline with Bryce and Iris that brings everything to the point. Criticism aside, Punch Monkey Season 2 captivates new viewers and established fans alike and makes for a successful overall performance.

Punch Monkey Season 2 is now streaming on Hulu.
