A new job advertisement from Gears of War E-Day Developer The Coalition has fueled speculation about a possible PlayStation release of the highly anticipated shooter. Xbox recently announced Gears of War: E-Day for Xbox Series X/S and PC at its big summer showcase in June, but if this job posting is any indication, a PlayStation 5 release could also be considered.

Gears of War: E-Day will be a prequel featuring younger versions of fan-favorite characters Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago. As the name suggests, the game will cover the events of Emergence Day, when the Locust hordes were first unleashed on the planet. The Gears of War The series has always been inextricably linked to the Xbox platform, with Microsoft even acquiring the rights to the IP in 2014. However, the gaming giant’s recent push towards cross-platform first-party titles has reportedly fundamentally shaken up its stance on exclusivity, with reports suggesting there is “no red line” as to which of its exclusives should be available cross-platform.

A reputable insider claims that Microsoft is still in the “early stages” of developing a remaster of Halo: Combat Evolved and could release it on the PS5.

While Gears of War: E-DayWhile the reveal trailer mentions PC and Xbox Series X/S as launch platforms, a recent job posting for a Senior Online Client Engineer seems to hint at plans for a potential PS5 release. The job posting states that it is for The Coalition’s online team and the selected candidate would help develop the multiplayer and online experiences for Gears of War: E-DayInterestingly, the preferred qualifications for the role mention “Experience with Xbox Live, PSN, Steam, or other online gaming platforms.” PSN stands for PlayStation Network, which could be a telling addition.

Finding software engineers who are familiar with developing for PSN is also something the Coalition has not done in the past. Gears of War title, as user nib95_ discovered on Twitter. Therefore, the assumption that a PS5 release of Gears of War: E-Day possibly weighed up internally. At the moment, however, there is no other evidence that the coalition is secretly working on a PS5 port of Gears of War: E-Day. It is also possible that the job posting simply refers to general experience with network architectures or perhaps even PlayStation ports of older Gears of War games.

How little is currently known about Gears of War: E-Day and the Xbox and PC release window, it would be a little premature to draw conclusions about a potential PlayStation launch. However, it’s only a matter of time before more Xbox first-party games come to PlayStation, and it should be interesting to see if any of the company’s tentpole franchises are destined for multiple platforms.
