Donald Trump plans to hold a rally with JD Vance in Michigan on Saturday

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump will return to Michigan on the campaign trail on Saturday and hold his first rally with Ohio Senator JD Vance after nominating Vance as his vice presidential running mate.

Trump’s campaign announced the upcoming visit to Grand Rapids on Tuesday, the second day of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee and three days after a gunman attempted to assassinate Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania.

According to the campaign, the former president will speak at an event at 5 p.m. Saturday at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids.

“Joe Biden’s failed policies have left a trail of death and devastation in Michigan,” the Trump campaign said in a statement. “President Trump will ease the financial pressure on households and restore law and order in Michigan.”

The Republican convention began on Monday with the nomination of Trump as presidential candidate and Vance, a first-term senator from Ohio, as vice president.

Pete Hoekstra, chairman of the Republican Party of Michigan, said Monday that Trump is “determined” to win the swing state of Michigan this fall.

Trump last visited Michigan in mid-June, when he was campaigning in Detroit. The former president warned of a rise in illegal immigration, weakened global politics and a faltering economy under another Biden term while courting both black voters at a Detroit church and conservative leaders at a Turning Point Action convention in Huntington Place.

Saturday’s trip would be Trump’s fourth visit to Michigan during this election campaign.

In 2020, Democratic President Joe Biden won Michigan 51% to 48%, 3 percentage points ahead of Trump. But Trump narrowly won Michigan in 2016 47.5% to 47.3% over Democrat Hillary Clinton, a margin of 10,704 votes. It was the first time a Republican candidate won Michigan, in 1988 with George HW Bush.

Biden campaigned in Detroit on Friday. It was the incumbent president’s fourth visit to the state this year. And Vice President Kamala Harris will visit Battle Creek and Kalamazoo on Wednesday.
