HR Derby anthem singer Ingrid Andress says she was drunk

After her widely criticized performance of the US national anthem at the MLB Home Run Derby, country singer Ingrid Andress apologized on Tuesday and said she was drunk.

“I am checking myself into a facility today to get the help I need,” she posted on social media. “That was not me last night. I apologize to MLB, all the fans and this country I love so much for that portrayal.”

The 32-year-old is the daughter of former major league strength and conditioning coach Brad Andress, who worked for the Detroit Tigers, Colorado Rockies and New York Mets.

Ingrid Andress has been nominated for four Grammys, including Best New Artist in 2021.

On Monday night, Andress belted out an a cappella version of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” an incredibly challenging song. Clips of her less popular performance at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, have since made the rounds on social media.

Andress began her career as a songwriter in Nashville before signing a deal for her own music and releasing her debut album in 2020. She released her second album in 2022 and took to social media to promote a new single due out next week.

This is not the first time that a performance of the national anthem has been panned. In the pantheon of the most controversial interpretations of the national anthem at sporting events, Roseanne Barr’s rendition at a San Diego Padres game in 1990 and Fergie’s rendition at the 2018 NBA All-Star Game drew similar negative reactions.

Country singer and native Texan Cody Johnson is scheduled to sing the national anthem before the All-Star Game on Tuesday night.
