CREATURE COMMANDOS executive producer says animated series will be ‘first expression’ of James Gunn’s DCU

CREATURE COMMANDOS executive producer says animated series will be ‘first expression’ of James Gunn’s DCU

While Superman will be DC Studios’ first live-action project next summer, we get a first taste of the DCU with Creature Commands later this year.

The animated series will introduce a group of monstrous heroes recruited by Amanda Waller after the events of Peacemaker Season 1 (which confusingly includes both is not DCU canon) made it impossible for her to re-form Task Force X.

In conversation with The Wrap Creature Commands Executive producer Dean Lorey revealed some new details about what to expect from the animated Max series.

“This will be the first expression of James Gunn’s DC Universe. We’re considering that canon and I think tonally it expresses his perspective on where he wants to take the universe.” he teased, adding that the premise of the show is “nothing new” for James Gunn.

“It’s ‘Suicide Squad’. He made it,” Lorey noted. “People won’t be surprised by what it is, but I think they’ll be really encouraged to see how comprehensively it’s going to impact this new version of the DCU, which I’m very excited about.”

Gunn wrote the entire Creature Commands and we know of at least one character, Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo), who will appear in a live-action film: Peacemaker Season 2 and Superman. More members of this strange team are expected to follow, although we currently don’t know when or where.

Needless to say, we’d be shocked if Gunn didn’t find a way to set up the Man of Tomorrow’s DCU debut in the show’s closing moments.

“(Creature Commandos) picks up directly from the season one finale of Peacemaker, in which Waller is operationally bound, meaning she can no longer risk human lives with impunity to carry out her secret, morally questionable missions.” Gunn recently said about the series: “Instead, she recruits a ragtag band of misfits, not unlike the Suicide Squad and Peacemaker.”

He added that the main actors of the show, “are actually monsters, and I can’t wait for you to meet them. Creating this series has been one of the greatest joys of my life.”

From executive producer and writer James Gunn, Creature Commands is the upcoming Max Original animated event series based on DC characters and produced by DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation. It follows Amanda Waller as she forms a black ops team out of monstrous prisoners.

Creature Commands Starring: Frank Grillo as Rick Flag, Sr., Indira Varma as Bride of Frankenstein, Zoë Chao as Nina Mazursky, David Harbour as Eric Frankenstein, Alan Tudyk as Doctor Phosphorus, Sean Gunn as GI Robot and Weasel, Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana Rostovic, Steve Agee as John Economos and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller.

The Sorcerer Star Anya Chalotra was also cast in the role of classic Wonder Woman villain Circe.

Creature Commands premieres on Max this December.
