According to a poll, the vast majority of Ukrainians believe that Russian President Vladimir Putin will only agree to an end to the war on his terms.

Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, and the war is currently in its third year. Putin has stated that Ukraine must abandon its claims to four provinces annexed by Russia and withdraw its troops from parts of the provinces that are still disputed, as a prerequisite for peace talks. He has also stated that Ukraine must abandon its intention to become a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

Russia has illegally annexed the four provinces of Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhia, although it does not control the entire provinces or combat zones in numerous locations within the provinces.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has rejected any peace agreement that would involve ceding land to Russia.

According to Semafor, a survey by the Razumkov Center and the local newspaper “Mirror of the Week” found that more than 80 percent of respondents said Putin would only seek an end to the war on his terms. An overwhelming majority of them described these conditions as unacceptable.

Survey: Few currently prefer talks with Russia

According to Semafor, the Razumkov Mirror poll found that only 44 percent of respondents currently favor talks to end the war.

The survey also found that 35 percent of respondents believed it was not yet time to negotiate, while 21 percent were unsure.

The report quoted experts from the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace as saying that the survey results require some contextualization.

They said the willingness to engage in peace talks should not be interpreted as a willingness on the part of Ukrainians to give up land, because most Ukrainians would prefer talks when they were in a position of strength – and that is not the case at the moment.
