Kat Von D’s new disco-gothic song “Illusion” + details on the second album

Kat Von D has just released a new disco-gothic song called “Illusion” and announced her second studio album My side of the mountain.

The tattoo artist and make-up guru shifted her career entirely to music at the beginning of the decade and released her debut album Love made me in August 2021.

Almost three years later, she’s back with “Illusion,” a dramatic synthpop track about looking back on a past relationship. It’s the third single from the album after “Vampire Love” and “Dead.”

The video for “Illusion” was shot in a field in Vevay, Indiana – Von D’s hometown. The singer is seen prancing across the field on a bright day in a witch-like dress. The contrast between the colors of the surroundings and her outfit seems to symbolize the conflicting feelings that arise when a relationship ends.

In late 2023, Von D returned to Christianity and has since defended her dark aesthetic, saying, “There is no dress code to be a Christian.”

“My side of the mountain is a love letter to all hopeless romantics, outsiders and lonely hearts trying to find their place in this cold and divisive world. As a child I read the 1959 novel My side of the mountain and has a deep connection to the little boy who ran away from home only to find solace in isolation, self-reflection and self-reliance in the wilderness,” Von D said in a press release.

“It’s certainly comforting to dream of escapism. But that’s not what this album is about. It’s about facing the crap we don’t want to face, accepting the things we can’t control, and fighting for the things that matter. This album is about my side of the argument. My side of the bed. My side of the line drawn in the sand. My side of the mountain. And I hope it makes others who feel the same way a little less alone in this world.”
