The 3 contracts with the worst value of the Denver Broncos in 2024

The 3 contracts with the worst value of the Denver Broncos in 2024

In the last offseason, the Denver Broncos have spent quite a bit of money on free agents. This offseason, the Broncos were frugal, mainly because of the money they owed to Russell Wilson, who was released before the start of the new league year.

Like any team, the Broncos want to get the most bang for their buck when it comes to veterans, whether they’re players they drafted and then extended their contracts or free agents who have played for other teams.

Which veterans are the Broncos getting good value for their salary from? And which veterans are the Broncos not getting enough from?

I will first examine the Broncos’ three worst value contracts based on About the capThe player rating for 2023 will be determined in comparison to salary.

Remember, a player who doesn’t have good contract value doesn’t necessarily mean he’s bad. It just means the Broncos didn’t get enough out of the player.

in relation to what he is expected to earn.

2023 OTC Ratingn: 8.3 million USD

Salary 2024: 15 million USD

McGlinchey represented the Broncos’ largest investment in free agency in 2023, signing a five-year, $87.5 million contract that effectively tied him to the Broncos for three seasons.

McGlinchey’s first season with the team was a mixed bag. Although he was a good run blocker, he struggled in pass defense. While some of that could be attributed to the quarterback’s play, much of it was his own fault.

McGlinchey needs to get his pass protection woes under control to justify the Broncos’ investment in him. While improved quarterback play will help, McGlinchey himself needs to improve.

OTC Rating 2023: 3.4 million USD

Salary 2024: 10 million USD

Jones signed a three-year, $30 million deal with the Broncos in 2022 and played well while being solid overall, but he may have gotten more money than expected for a defensive player whose strength is run blocking.

In 2023, Jones did not play as well as he did the year before. I had thought the Broncos would release him to save some money and salary cap space, but the Broncos decided to keep him.

It’s not a given that the Broncos will move on from Jones after training camp, so it would be nice to see him bounce back now that he’s entering the final year of his contract.

OTC Rating 2023: 5.9 million USD

Salary 2024: 12 million USD

Powers was another notable free agent signed in 2023, receiving a four-year, $52 million contract that gives him $27 million guaranteed.

Powers has had his ups and downs in the 2023 season. He needs to show more consistency week after week to justify the Broncos’ commitment.

To be fair, Powers’ contract didn’t put him in the big leagues and looks great compared to the deals given to free agent guards this season, but it would be nice to see Powers improve and get the Broncos more value out of his contract.
