Most watched new Netflix movies, documentaries and series of 2024

It’s been a strange first half of the year for Netflix. Sure, some hits have made it into the top 10 of all time, but due to the issues with Netflix’s offering, there aren’t quite as many as you’d expect. Let’s break down the most-watched shows, movies, documentaries, and docuseries released so far in 2024.

For this analysis, we used our Complete Viewing Equivalent metric based on the first 14 days (2 weeks) of release. The numbers are all from Netflix’s Top 10 site. The CVE metric is the number of hours Netflix releases each week divided by the runtime of the series. This is what Netflix now calls “views.”

1. The most watched English-language series of 2024 so far

1. Make a fool of me once – 61M
2. Griselda – 46.3 million
3. Avatar: The Last Airbender – 45.7 million
4. The men – 37.8 million
5. 3-Body Problem – 30.7 M

The first half of 2024 has been quite good for Netflix so far and the series have done well, even if the placement among the top five most watched series is quite surprising.

Nobody would have bet on it Deceive me once to do this well, while 3 Body problem is a good hit, but not the hit that Netflix probably expected.

Of these five series Griselda And Deceive me once are limited series and will not return. Avatar: The Last Airbender And 3 Body problem have already been renewed for several seasons (which doesn’t happen often on Netflix).

The last unknown is the British series The gentlemenwhich did well on the charts but hasn’t been renewed yet. It had a “miniseries” feel to it, but is still labeled as a regular series on Netflix, so who knows?

And finally, where is the phenomenon of Baby reindeer? Well, it fell into a blind spot in my methodology as it started to rise sharply from the third week onwards and therefore did not make it into the top 5 of the charts based on the first 14 days alone.

When it comes to returning series, the great success of the third season of Bridgerton concealed the fact that not many English-language series would return with a new season in the first half of 2024.

The final season of Sweet Tooth did what it could following up on the first two seasons, as did season 2 of Heartache highbut season 2 of The wild 90s far below average, and season 3 of Girls5Eva is missing. Sure, last year’s strikes may be to blame, but it’s not just returning English-language series that are suffering from the shortage of new releases.

2. The most watched international series of 2024 so far.

1. The Asunta case – 20.7 million
2. Raise your voices – 18.9 million
3. Parayste: The Grey – 18.7 million
4. The Signal – 13.2 million
5. Furies – 12.8 million

On the international series side, Netflix did not have a major breakthrough success in the first six months of 2024, but instead a series of solid hits, led by the Spanish series The Asunta case And Raise your voices.

Parasyte: The Grey went very well in South Korea, and in Europe the German series The signal and the French series Furies round off the top 5 series.

Of these five shows, three are over as they are listed as miniseries (The Asunta case, Parasyte the GreyAnd The signal), while the remaining two are yet to be renewed, which is a true sign of Netflix’s success.

Even for returning international series, things are pretty bleak, with no hits and weaker new seasons. The end of Young Royals was relatively uneventful, by the way. Well, the strikes can’t be blamed for the lack of content in the first half of 2024, so perhaps Netflix has reached a point where the lack of renewals is starting to make itself felt internationally.

Looking ahead, the second half of 2024 will look completely different, with Season 2 of Squid Game set for publication.

3. The most watched English-language films of 2024 so far

1. Virgo – 99.1 million
2. Elevator – 80.5 m
3. Atlas-66M
4. A family affair – 65M
5. Trigger warning – 57.7 million

Netflix has released significantly fewer English-language films in the first half of 2024, but there are some solid hits among them, starting with maidwhich made it into the top 10 of all time.

Elevator also proved Kevin Hart’s remaining star power. A disappointment could be Atlas with Jennifer Lopez, who did not fare any better than The motherwhich was released last year. The romantic comedy A family affair and the action film Trigger warning also had solid numbers.

Last year, women were also the driving force behind the hits of Netflix films. Now there is one flop that we have to mention here: Rebel Moon Part 2, which failed (by far) to improve on the ratings of the first film, and it will be interesting to see how the re-release of both films in August in a new (and improved?) cut fares on the charts.

4. The most watched international films of 2024 so far

1. Under Paris – 73.8 million
2. Society of Snow – 57.8 million
3. Colors of Evil Red – 36.6 million
4. Badland Hunters – 36.5 million
5. The Tearsmith – 36.4 million

This is the bright spot in Netflix’s 2024 schedule after international films did anything but well with the success of the shark movie. Under Paris and the critically acclaimed Spanish film Society of Snowboth of which landed on the podium of the top 10 international films of all time.

Aside from the first two films, the other three films achieved solid results in genres ranging from Italian youth films to South Korean post-apocalyptic films. A very varied offering indeed, it’s fair to say.

1. What Jennifer Did – $36.5 million
2. Lover-Stalker-Killer – 27.5 million
3. Einstein and the Bomb – 18M**
4. Pop’s biggest night – 17M
5. Hack Your Health – 12.3 million

True crime remains the dominant documentary genre on Netflix. What Jennifer did And Lover Stalker Killer the best figures in the first half of 2024. On the heels of Oppenheimer (presumably), Einstein and the Bomb was the bomb, during The Greatest Night in Pop performed very well and is currently the highest rated Netflix documentary of 2024 on IMDB.

6. The most watched documentary series of 2024 so far

1. American Nightmare – $36.5 million
2. Testament: The Story of Moses – 20M
3. Ashley Madison: Sex, Lies and Scandals – 18 M**
4. Dancing for the Devil – 16.5 million
5. The Worst Roommate Ever – 13M**

Not surprisingly, True Crime also tops the charts of most-watched documentary series, with American nightmare leader in 2024. One genre that is gaining momentum on Netflix is ​​religious-focused docuseries, such as Testament: The Story of Moses. One genre missing from this list is sports-related docuseries, which failed to gain traction despite Netflix releasing several of them in the first half of the year.
