4-star defensive lineman Jamarcus Whyce visits Michigan State

Michigan State and coach Jonathan Smith are not letting a successful June stop them from continuing to intensively recruit young talent.

Coach Smith and his coaching staff are working around the clock to find talent in multiple recruiting classes while keeping an eye on the future. Although Smith is entering his first season at the helm, he knows how important future recruiting classes are to the rebuilding process of a college football program.

Coaches hired to turn around a program typically have the first few seasons to bring in their preferred recruits before being judged too harshly as a coach who was involved in rebuilding another football program at his previous site, Oregon State. While Oregon State’s problems were markedly different from Michigan State’s, both programs’ on-field issues were relatively similar when Smith arrived.

Smith and his coaching staff have nearly filled the 2026 recruiting class and are beginning to focus on recruiting classes beyond that. On3’s Jason Killop recently reported that four-star defensive lineman Jamarcus Whyce will attend Michigan State in late July, which is great news for Michigan State.

WhyA native of Dayton, Ohio, Whyce is considered one of the best players from Ohio in the 2026 recruiting class. According to 247Sports, Whyce is the 25th best defensive player and 199th best overall prospect in the 2026 recruiting class. He is the seventh best player from Ohio in the 2026 recruiting class.

Michigan State will have to work hard to sign Whyce. According to 247Sports, he has offers from Indiana, Boston College, Louisville, Kentucky, Missouri, West Virginia, Notre Dame, Purdue, Vanderbilt, Tennessee, Wisconsin and West Virginia.
