Generative AI can now achieve some remarkable feats – ChatGPT or Midjourney are the best proof of that. But did you know that it can also make pretty good music? That’s right. AI song generators can help you produce a new song for your house party, advertising campaign or the atmosphere of your YouTube video. There are so many options, but which one should you use? After trying out several potential candidates, Suno became my favorite AI song generator.

Suno is the best AI song generator on the market

Most people interested in an AI song generator value simplicity and results, and Suno delivers on both. The platform doesn’t have an Android app, but the company released a new iPhone app earlier this month. Still, the tool is accessible through your favorite browser on desktop or smartphone. I tested Suno on my Windows machine.

Suno’s homepage is a good example of what is possible with this tool. There is a searchable and playable list of the tracks created with it, and most of the songs in the list have surprisingly good lyrics (in multiple languages) and a clever combination of different genres.

Suno’s homepage shows well what is possible with this tool.

Once you’re done browsing, you’ll need to create an account with your Apple, Google, Discord, or Microsoft credentials to use the tool. Alternatively, Suno also allows account creation via a phone number. It’s all a bit cumbersome, and I would have preferred to use a standalone email address, but given the tool’s capabilities, it’s a minor inconvenience.

Once you’re signed up, you type a prompt, or “song description” as Suno calls it, into the appropriate text box. Suno allows users to give more detailed descriptions than other services, provided your prompt is under 200 words. My first prompt was just eight, and the results were surprisingly good. The more nods to moods and tones you use, the more nuance the song offers. It also suggests that creators use “genres and moods rather than specific artists and songs” to guide the service.

After first using “a song from a defeated battlefield with horns and strings,” Suno took a minute or two to create two distinct tracks. Both were oddly good. One was decidedly more dramatic, while the other was more orchestral. Granted, the songs produced lack the human touch of a musician, but they were listenable. Suno produced the most release-ready tracks of the tools I’ve tried so far. The tool adds all the riffs, chooses the perfect key, adds a chorus and several verses, and even fills in the lyrics. Suno described the tracks as “dramatic, orchestral, and dark.” These elements really came across.

My second request was “a lo-fi dreamscape that is reflective and nostalgic, with elements of soft piano.” Suno delivered two more tracks called “Fading Memories.” I liked these even better – they would be perfect for a slice-of-life YouTube vlog. Listen to both productions here and here.

If you like the track created by Suno, you can download it. Alternatively, you can edit the details, although you will need a premium account to optimize the song cover. A free account offers 50 credits that are updated daily, enough to create at least five tracks, but those who want to use their tracks commercially or have more tokens will have to pay.

A Pro plan costs $10 per month but offers multiple jobs, 2,500 credits, and terms and conditions. A Premier plan increases the credit count to 10,000 for $30 per month.

Despite its ease of use and excellent results, Suno won’t be to everyone’s taste. It lacks practical tools and some may prefer a no-account alternative. Still, it’s a quick and easy way to create catchy audio tracks with minimal effort and knowledge.

Are there good alternatives to AI song generators?

Although I recommend Suno, it is not the right choice for users who need more practical tools. Below is a list of alternatives that offer these and other features:

  • Sound raw: Soundraw is a remarkably powerful AI song generator. Unlike Suno’s hands-free approach, Soundraw allows technical users to tinker with several facets. Yes, you can still use a prompt to generate a basic track, but users can also edit the key of the song, the instruments used, the volume, and the beats per minute, and do all of this on a per-bar basis. It’s more of an AI-powered song creation tool than a completely prompt-based tool, which is really in its favor. However, this also means it lacks the simplicity that Suno offers. The tool is also free to try.
  • Language mod: Voicemod is one of the first AI song generator tools I’ve used. It’s a simple online tool that can generate tracks with specific AI singers, genre styles, and lyrics. It’s not a solution for those looking for a more professional music creation tool, but it’s suitable for those who want to create a catchy birthday or greeting tune. However, you’ll need to create a Voicemod account to download tracks.
  • Mubert: Mubert is surprisingly adept at creating and discovering royalty-free music. The tool also makes it super easy to create a track based on a mood, genre, activity, or text prompt. Users can also choose the audio type (track, loop, mix, or jingle) and duration. The tool is free to try, but you’ll need to create a free account to download tracks. You’ll also need a Pro license for $39 per month to use the music commercially.
  • Reefgen: As the name suggests, Riffgen allows users to create catchy riffs quickly and easily. While it’s not a proper song generator, it creates jingles without lyrics in a snap. You’ll need to sign in with your Google credentials, but once set up, the tool offers five free generations per day.
  • Soundful: Soundful is a hybrid of Suno and Soundraw, and offers some music editing features as well as basic prompt generation. The initial setup requires you to select some of your favorite genres, and it will generate several sample tracks from them. Of all the tools, Soundful produces the best ambient music for YouTube videos in my opinion. However, you will need to purchase the premium subscription for $4.99/month to use tracks in commercial projects.

While these tools each offer slightly different offerings in the realm of AI-based song generation, Suno is by far the best option for most users.
