Club Sun City West defies the heat with all-day harvest

The members of Scrapbooking, Papercrafts & More found a way to cope with the recent extremely high mercury temperatures: They participated in the club’s quarterly all-day “Crop” at the Beardsley Center.

During the day-long workshop and potluck, members can take paper and card crafting classes or work on their own projects. At least half a dozen proactive members were busy working on their annual holiday cards, while the digital scrapbooking group designed personalized photo pages to appear in each of their professionally printed photo books.

During the morning session, club president Lynne Marion offered a class on paper bag books. Using patterned designer paper, sturdy cardstock pages, ribbons, and metal rings, participants folded paper bags to create pages with spaces in between where ribboned and decorated labels and ephemera could be tucked into hidden pockets. The book makes a great gift or table book to hold photos and memorabilia.

After a potluck at lunch, member Christina Hecht taught a lesson on making the novel three-sided, pyramid-shaped teepee card. The card, which folds flat and ships in a standard A2 envelope, can be unfolded and shaped into a pyramid.

Ribbons can be attached to the sides of the card to make it easy to display upright for decoration in the home or office. Participants were also shown how to use the card as a hanging ornament by attaching ribbons to the top of the card.

Learn how to make greeting cards, paper crafts, and scrapbooks (traditional or digital) by attending SPAM meetings in Beardsley’s Agave Room on Thursdays (10am-3pm), Fridays (10am-3pm), and Saturdays (10am-5pm).
