Chris Dickey, well-known foreign correspondent and author, dies at 68

Chris Dickey, foreign editor of The Daily Beast, died unexpectedly in Paris on Thursday at the age of 68. The cause of death was heart failure. after to Daily Beast Editor-in-Chief Noah Shachtman.

The magazine recognized Dickey’s decades-long career, which included stints at The Washington Post and Newsweek, and praised his personality. Correspondent Barbie Latza Nadeau wrote about how she helped Dickey through a period of temporary blindness when they were both overseas and described how they felt a bond when he spoke about his experiences in the media.

The son of poet and novelist James Dickey, he began writing books himself, publishing a mix of novels and nonfiction that earned him spots on the New York Times bestseller list.

“He was a grateful man, grateful for every person he met, every story someone told him, every article he was able to edit perfectly, and for journalism as it was and as it continues to evolve,” Nadeau added.

Online, journalists reacted to the news and published their own hymns of praise.

TheWraps Editor-in-Chief Sharon Waxman wrote“I am devastated to hear this news. Chris was one of the last great foreign correspondents with flair and a love for great stories and the great things in life. Shocked and saddened. Thank you Chris for letting me into the club.”

Joy Reid from MSNBC wrote“I am devastated by this news. Chris Dickey was truly a legend (and I didn’t know until this obituary that his father wrote Deliverance or of his many books that I am now dying to read) and one of our favorite guests at #amjoy. Rest in peace.”

“This is a heartbreaking loss for all who admired him as a writer, correspondent and colleague: he was one of the last of his kind. Our deepest condolences go out to his wonderful family,” wrote Andrea Mitchell of NBC News.

Added Brandy Zadrozny of NBC News: “Chris was so good. He covered conflicts that most young reporters at an Internet news website can’t imagine. But he was so generous with his experience, so curious about new topics and so flexible in an evolving industry.”

“I am devastated to learn of the sudden death of great journalist and beloved colleague Chris Dickey,” tweeted MSNBC reporter Chris Jansing. “I can’t imagine Paris without his magnetic presence, and our coverage of important foreign issues without his deep knowledge. He was generous, kind, funny and brilliant. Rest in peace, Christopher.”

Brian Williams paid tribute to Dickey in a memorial segment Thursday night, calling him “our man in Paris” and “the real deal.” Watch it below:

According to the obituary, Dickey leaves behind his wife Carol, son James and three grandchildren.
