NASA sends Missy Elliott’s hip-hop song into space; Internet users say: “I’d love to see that…”

For the first time, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has said it has sent a hip-hop song into space. According to NASA, on July 12, an inspirational message from Missy Elliott traveled approximately 158 million miles into space along with the lyrics of “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly), a single from her platinum-selling debut album.”

The US space agency said the transmission was sent from the agency’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California.

Brittany Brown, director of digital and technology in the communications office at NASA Headquarters in Washington, said: “Missy already has experience in bringing space-centric storytelling and futuristic imagery to her music videos, so the opportunity to work on something out of the ordinary is a really good fit for her.”

In addition, the agency noted that the song was transmitted at the speed of light, with the radio frequency signal taking nearly 14 minutes to reach the planet.

About transferring her song to Venus, she said: “I chose Venus because she symbolizes strength, beauty and empowerment and I am so honored to have the opportunity to share my art and message with the universe!”

On Instagram, NASA wrote: “Beep beep, who has the keys to the Jeep? Vr-rrrrrrrooooom! For the first time ever, we broadcast a hip-hop song #OutOfThisWorld.”

Internet users were quick to react, with one user saying, “I honestly can’t think of a better choice.”

Another wrote: “So technically Missy Elliot has become the world’s first interstellar artist.”

“Go into the universe, missy!!! Smile!!! Well deserved!!!”

“I’m happy to see this from NASA”

“Great, now Venus is cooler than Earth”

“I wonder how many aliens have intercepted this song and are now trying to decipher its meaning. They probably call us all aliens. LOL!”

“Missy Elliott is still on the rise”

“Missy! Always on the next level and breaking new ground”

Some users criticized Missy Elliott as a wrong choice and said there were other great music options.

“That was very clever! If there are hostile aliens on Venus, it will stop them from ever coming here!”

“Tons of great, I mean great music from all of humanity throughout the history of music and you choose a pop song by MissElliott”

“How much did this cost the taxpayer?” asked one user.

Another user also suggested: “I think the song #Spacebound by @Eminem would be a really good song to play too.”

“Venusians are banging on the wall. “Be quiet! We’re trying to sleep.””

“How sad that even NASA is pandering.”
