The Israeli military claims there is no evidence it was responsible for Friday’s deadly attack on a tent camp in the al-Mawasi region of the southern Gaza Strip that killed 25 people and injured 50 others, AFP news agency reported.

“An initial investigation found that there is no evidence that the (Israeli military) carried out an attack in the humanitarian area in al-Mawasi. The incident is currently under investigation,” a military spokesman told AFP.

In a statement, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said that “high-caliber projectiles” had landed “just a few meters” from its office. The office is surrounded by displaced Palestinians living in tents. The ICRC did not say who fired the projectiles.

A survivor of the attack told Al Jazeera that the fire “consumed” them “from all directions.”

“We had just eaten and were about to sleep and rest when we suddenly heard the sound of loud explosions destroying our houses. We were alone and didn’t know what to do. We still can’t process what happened,” said the survivor.
