Amazon series “The Runarounds” is filmed in Wilmington, NC

Filming for an Amazon series is scheduled to begin this week in Wilmington.

In the new eight-part series “The Runarounds” scenes will be filmed on the lawn in front of New Hanover High School on Friday, according to an email from the city of Wilmington.

Wilmington resident Jonas Pate, who also co-created the hit Netflix series “Outer Banks,” will direct “The Runarounds,” about a real-life pop/rock band of the same name trying to make it big. The band appeared in the third season of “Outer Banks” and played the Wilmington venue Bourgie Nights in 2023.

A pilot for “The Runarounds” was shot in Wilmington in 2022 as the “Untitled Band Project,” with locations including New Hanover High School, downtown Wilmington, and the Forest Hills and Carolina Heights neighborhoods.

In an interview with StarNews in February, Pate said The Runarounds could create opportunities for Wilmington bands because some scenes call for bands other than The Runarounds to play.

“I would rather hire a local band than a band from somewhere else,” he said.

“The Runarounds” could also be the final screen appearance of North Carolina music legend Dexter Romweber, who filmed a cameo role for the series in 2022. Romweber, who rose to fame in the late 1980s with the punk/rockabilly group Flat Duo Jets, died on February 16 at the age of 57.

In his honor, Pate said, there will always be a location called Romweber’s Pizza in The Runarounds.
