Why Alan Cumming was ‘angry’ when Taylor Swift visited his show

Alan Cumming has admitted he was “furious” when Taylor Swift turned up to see him at Cabaret.

The Traitors US host told the story on The One Show, revealing that pop superstar Swift was watching him perform in the Broadway production during his final performance. He said the singer came in through the stage door and when he spotted her backstage, he wondered what was going on.

Cumming said that when Swift walked into the theater, everyone went quiet and the mood was “killed.” Laughing, he said that although he was angry at first, he spoke to Swift afterwards and that she was the “nicest person in the world.”

He told hosts Alex Jones and Jermaine Jenas: “She came to see me the last time I was at Cabaret on Broadway. I was really angry because they brought her in through the stage door – the manager of the troupe was a huge Taylor fan.”

“I thought to myself, ‘Why don’t we go? What happened?’ You know, before the show, and somehow the mood was spoiled.”

He continued: “She came in and I remember thinking, ‘What’s going on?’

“And then she came in and was standing right there. I was about to keep going, but I was like, what the hell is Taylor Swift doing backstage? She said, ‘Hi,’ and I said, ‘Hi.’

“And then she came in and everyone was really quiet, and the mood of the show was kind of lost a little bit at the beginning, so I was pretty angry.”

However, it seemed like everything had changed when Cumming met the singer after the show.

He explained: “And of course afterwards she was the nicest person in the world! I was angry too because she was so gorgeous!”

“And then she saw my husband (Grant Shaffer) and said, ‘You must be so proud,’ as if I were his child… she couldn’t have been more charming.”

Cumming also spoke about the US version of The Traitors, which he hosts. There have been two seasons of the reality hit so far, with a third to follow.

And the actor shared that viewers can expect one change: his canine pal Lala will be getting a bigger role. The dog – a sort of “co-host” to the star – is a popular part of the series across the pond.

“The world spoke, the world wanted more of Lala,” Cumming said. “And so she’s actually in the show we just filmed, she’s in it a lot more.”

“She plays a much more central role,” he laughed.
