Gastonia Baseball Club back home after a week of mixed results on the road

After a week on the road, the Gastonia baseball team returns – albeit briefly – to CaroMont Health Park for a three-game series against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs.

The series began Tuesday and follows a six-game road trip for Gastonia, which saw the club win two of three games against the Dirty Birds of Charleston, West Virginia, before suffering the same fate against the Lexington Legends.

Here is a quick recap of the Gastonia Baseball Club’s week.

WHAT’S IN A NAME?: The Gastonia Baseball Club is looking for a new nickname. Here’s how the current options compare

HAVE A HIGH: The Gastonia Baseball Club is off to a hot start in 2024. Here are three reasons why.

Tuesday, July 9

Gastonia 8, Charleston 7: Justin Wylie was 3-for-4 with a double, a home run, three RBIs and a stolen base, the latter leading to the game-winning run in the seventh inning as GBC extended its winning streak to 11 games. Clint Coulter (double, RBI), Josh Stowers (double, RBI) and Eric De La Rosa (double) each contributed two hits.

Wednesday, July 10

Gastonia 16, Charleston 9: Gastonia’s winning streak reached 12 games, thanks in large part to a six-run, four-error eighth inning by Charleston. De La Rosa (home run, three RBIs), Stowers (two stolen bases), and Marc Flores (home run, three RBIs), Jake Gatewood (RBI) and Richie Martin (home run, three RBIs) each had two hits to help secure the win. Alan Alonso also hit a solo home run for GBC.

Thursday, July 11

Charleston 8, Gastonia 4: A fast start fizzled out for Gastonia in the series finale, as Charleston scored seven unanswered runs to end GBC’s 12-game winning streak. Gastonia was only able to get five hits, with Wylie accounting for two of them, including a double and an RBI. Gatewood hit a solo home run and another RBI in a losing cause.

Friday, July 12

Lexington 4, Gastonia 2: Gastonia outhit Lexington but struggled to score runs and lost at Lexington. Coulter was one of the few bright spots for the GBC, hitting 3 for 4, having a double and a stolen base.

Saturday, July 13

Lexington 7, Gastonia 1: Gastonia couldn’t get anything done in Lexington on Saturday. The Legends scored seven early runs and relied on their bullpen to force GBC to its third straight loss. Gastonia’s only run came on a solo home run by Hidekel Gonzalez in the third inning. GBC had four total hits in the game.

Sunday, July 14

Gastonia 9, Lexington 5: Gastonia ended a three-game losing streak by winning the series finale in Lexington. After a two-day sleep in Lexington, the GBC hitters awoke with 11 hits, with three players — Martin, Gatewood (home run, three RBIs) and Coulter (home run, three RBIs) — each getting multiple hits. De La Rosa also had a two-run blast.

Where does GBC stand in the league table?

After eight games in the second half of the season, Gastonia (5-3) is two games behind the rival High Point Rockers in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball’s South Division standings. Charleston and Southern Maryland begin the week at 4-4, while Lexington is 2-6. The GBC is a league-best 51-20 overall.

About the team

  • Outfielder Josh Stowers and reliever Phoenix Sanders were both named to the ALPB midseason all-star team. Stowers posted a .313 batting average in the first half, with 73 hits, 51 runs and 27 stolen bases. Sanders tied for the league lead with 11 saves while posting a 3-0 record, 1.80 ERA and 33 strikeouts in the first half.
  • Four GBC players are on the move, their contracts have been bought out by teams in the Mexican league. Pitchers Zac Lowther and Nick Wells are moving to Toros de Tijuana, their left-handed colleague Ian McKinney is going to Monclova. Catcher Patrick Mazieka was signed by Mexico City.
