Meet firefighter/emergency doctor Chris Schmid | Fire Department

Where are you stationed?
I am currently working the C shift at Station 1 (W. Dayton Street).

Why did you want to pursue this career?
During my senior year of high school, I had the opportunity to ride with the Madison Fire Department. I was impressed by the professionalism and quality of care the crew provided. The firefighters on duty that day really welcomed me and explained exactly what they were doing and why in a way that I understood at the time without having any prior experience. This opportunity solidified my desire to join the fire department after high school.

What have you come to love about Madison or do you enjoy doing that is unique to Madison?
Madison really has so much to offer. There are always events and things to do throughout the city. My wife and I are looking forward to spending lots of time outdoors this summer with our one-year-old son at the farmers markets, Henry Vilas Zoo, and many other fun activities.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to join the MFD?
It is a very competitive process and you may have to apply multiple times, but don’t let that discourage you. Work on your development every day and get involved in the community.
