Daughter of Jodi Benson, original voice of Ariel, plays the role of the Little Mermaid in a new production

Benson’s daughter Delaney plays Ariel in a new stage production of “The Little Mermaid,” which premiered in Miami over the weekend.

Jodi Benson’s daughter Delaney has become part of her mother’s world in a new stage production.

Delaney plays Ariel – the same role her mother Jodi played in the 1989 animated film – in a new immersive production of The little mermaid at the Area Stage in South Miami,

According to Area Stage’s official website, the new production is “a slimmer, shorter version in a new, all-encompassing space designed from the ground up to tell this story.”

The show officially opened on July 11, and 62-year-old Jodi was on hand to support her daughter during opening weekend. A TikTok user posted a video on July 14 of the voice actress proudly watching Delaney sing Ariel’s song “Part of Your World” for the audience, with Delaney even giving a loving nod to her mother. The clip then switches to Jodi cheering on her daughter and the rest of the cast at the end of the show.

“It was truly such an honor to watch Delaney Benson play Ariel and Jodi Benson be the most supportive mom!!!” the TikTok user wrote in her caption. “So lucky to have been able to witness this 😭.”

On July 2, Delaney spoke to the Miami-Herald‘S Mama’s Uncut about taking on the role of Ariel and said the new show is “different from the cartoon.”

“This is a new adaptation. It’s 90 minutes long. It’s immersive,” Delaney said. “The audience will be right under me. I can see it. I can feel it. I can smell it. I’ve never done anything like this before.”

Delaney joked that her mother “didn’t do that on stage. I’m not a real mermaid.”

If she had been offered the role of Ariel a year ago, she probably wouldn’t have taken it, Delaney told the outlet.

“I try to distance myself from ‘following in her footsteps’ or ‘she’s just like her mother,’ because that’s not who I am,” Delaney said. “We’re about the same age as when (my mother) voiced Ariel and I’m doing this, but we’re completely different people and I’m excited to bring myself along.”

The little mermaid Production will run in Miami until August 4.

Jodi lent her voice to Ariel in the animated film and also had a brief cameo in the market square scene in the 2023 live-action film.
