Military Appreciation Week honors prisoners of war and missing persons

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Pennsylvania State University’s 13th annual Military Appreciation Week will be held Nov. 11-17. The week-long celebration recognizes and honors prisoners of war and missing soldiers and their families.

The 13th annual Military Appreciation Week features a week of festivities and events open to all university, community and military personnel. Additional details will be announced in the fall.

Penn State is once again offering military members and dependents the opportunity to attend a Penn State football game for free through Seats for Servicemembers. This year’s Penn State Military Recognition Football Game will be held on September 21 against Kent State University. The game will be held the Saturday following National POW/MIA Recognition Day on September 20. More information about Seats for Servicemembers, the ticket request portal and a pre-game tailgate event will be announced in the coming weeks.

“This year’s theme is dedicated to honoring those who served and were either prisoners of war or never had the chance to return home. Their sacrifices and the uncertainty their families face serve as a stark reminder of the price of freedom,” said Eugene McFeely, senior director of veterans affairs and services at Penn State. “Penn State is honored to have the opportunity to support these individuals and support their loved ones with compassion and gratitude.”

Penn State is proud to support the men and women of the military, continuing the university’s long-standing tradition of providing them with the resources and support necessary for successful education and careers. The university celebrated its first military honors event in 2012, and the tradition has continued to grow over the years. Each year, the Military Honors Week Board of Directors selects a theme, and last year’s theme honored military families with members who are serving or have served in the U.S. Armed Forces.

Send a “service profile”

Each year, Penn State students, faculty, staff and alumni with military connections are invited to submit a profile of their military service for a chance to be featured on the University’s Military Appreciation website. Profiles may also be submitted by family members and loved ones.

Profiles are used to highlight the service and sacrifice of members of the Penn State community who have served or are currently serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. There is a growing collection of profiles of staff, students, and alumni from across the University that can be viewed on the Penn State Military Appreciation website.

Support military recognition at Penn State

Penn State offers numerous programs and resources to support the military community. Community members can make a donation to support a number of scholarships and programs at Penn State that support student veterans and military families, military dependents, military honors events, and more.
