Linwood Post 239 wins Ultimate Strike Zone tournament

The Linwood Post 239 baseball team won the 23rd season last weekend with a score of 4-0.rd annual Ultimate Strike Zone tournament.

Linwood began the group stage with a 21-3 win over Palacios Tailors. Jack Rich got the win on the mound, going six innings, allowing three runs on seven hits and one walk, and recording four strikeouts.

Westyn Bryant went 4-for-4 with four runs batted in and two runs scored, while Bryce Neitzel went 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs and scored four times, Payton Guilbeaux went 3-for-4 with two doubles and four RBIs and scored twice, and Malachi Murray had two hits with a double and two RBIs and scored twice.

Rich went 2-for-3 with an RBI and scored twice, Kole Wilson scored three runs, and Jake VanderHaar and Owen Wendt each had an RBI and scored twice.

Next, Post 239 defeated Saginaw Means 10-0 in four innings. Brayden Simmon went the full four innings, allowing no hits and recording seven strikeouts to secure the win.

Rich and Guilbeaux both hit 2 for 2 with a double and an RBI, while Neitzel and Simmon both hit 1 for 1 with an RBI and scored twice, Wilson hit 1 for 1 with two RBIs and Aaron Smith scored a run.

Linwood capped off pool play with an 8-1 victory over Wow Factor-Michigan. Colton King earned the win by pitching four innings, allowing one unearned run on three hits and five walks, while Murray pitched three scoreless innings as a relief pitcher.

Rich went 1-for-1 with two RBIs and scored twice, while VanderHaar added an RBI.

In the championship game, Post 239 outhit Palacios 9-1 in five innings. Wendt got the complete-game win, allowing five hits and striking out four.

Smith went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, while Neitzel went 1-for-2 with an RBI and scored twice and VanderHaar went 1-for-2 and scored two runs.

Linwood (15-7-2) will open the American Legion Baseball Zone 4 tournament at Northwood University with a game against Bay City Post 18 at 10 a.m. Thursday.

The winner of that game will face Mount Pleasant Post 110 on Thursday at 2:30 p.m., while the loser will play an elimination game on Thursday at 5:00 p.m.
