Fairhope’s Supper Club in Sweetwater Branch damaged in early morning fire

Fairhope has lost another restaurant to fire. The Supper Club at Sweetwater Branch, a members-only supper club, suffered catastrophic damage after a fire in the early morning hours of July 15.

According to the Fairhope Volunteer Fire Department, the Fairhope Fire Department, Fairhope Police Department and Medstar were dispatched to the building on Scenic Highway 98 at 1:30 a.m. Daphne and Barnwell fire departments also responded to the scene. Crews began fighting the fire and left the scene around 6 a.m. There were no injuries, but the building sustained major damage.

Emergency crews returned around 8:00 a.m. because there were reports that the fire had flared up again.

The Supper Club at Sweetwater Branch is owned by Cooper Restaurants, a division of the Cooper Group of Companies founded by brothers David J. Cooper Sr. and Angus R. Cooper II. The restaurant group owns and operates Felix’s Fish Camp Grill, Bluegill and Ruth’s Chris Steak House – Mobile.

As of the afternoon of July 15, the building was surrounded by a chain-link fence to keep out the curious public, and crime scene tape was still in place. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Gulf Coast Media has reached out to Cooper Restaurants for comment and will continue to update this story as new information becomes available.
