1 song made RuPaul fulfill his dream of becoming a pop star

Today, RuPaul is best known as a presenter RuPaul’s Drag Racebut many fans got to know him through one of his songs. The track in question marked a certain era of dance music. In addition, it helped the drag icon fulfill a dream he had since childhood.

1 RuPaul song stood out from almost all other songs in the same genre

In an interview with Out in 1992, the legendary drag queen revealed that he didn’t always want to be a drag queen. “Well, from a very early age, until I was ten, I wanted to be a race car driver,” he said. “Drag racing, right? (laughs) I swear, but then, at ten, I decided I wanted to be a pop star.”

“I always wanted to be a pop star, I really did,” he continued. “And you know, when I was 10, I realised I was a pop star, only nobody knew. So I had to go out and tell the world I was. Show them. I’ve always been a pop star.”

RuPaul’s wish was granted with the song “Supermodel (You Better Work).” Alongside Madonna’s “Vogue” and Robin S’s “Show Me Love,” “Supermodel (You Better Work)” is perhaps the most popular house song from the genre’s heyday. It’s one of those upbeat pop tracks that can make anyone feel famous and glamorous if they listen to it in the right mood. It was featured on RuPaul’s Drag Race countless times and it sounds like it could have been an inspiration for Britney Spears’ “Spears’s Work B****”.

What made “Supermodel (You Better Work)” different from his other songs?

“Supermodel (You Better Work)” peaked at number 45 on the Billboard Hot 100 and stayed on the charts for 20 weeks. The track was RuPaul’s only song to reach the top 50, making him a one-hit wonder. Of course, he is much more famous than most one-hit wonders, having found success on television and appearing in some cult films, such as To Wong Foo, thank you for everything! Julie Newmar And But I’m a cheerleader. On a musical level, RuPaul is best understood as someone like Jennifer Lawrence or Bruce Willis, who had some success as a musician but is primarily known for his work in other media.

Two more singles by RuPaul made it into the US charts: “Snapshot” and a remake of “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” with Elton John himself. None of these songs made it past number 95, but at least RuPaul can claim to have sung a duet with an icon of classic rock.

RuPaul said other pop stars are drag queens

RuPaul may seem like a different kind of pop singer, especially compared to his 1990s contemporaries, but he told Out that’s not the case. “Basically, every pop star that’s ever walked the earth is a drag queen,” he said. “And now this is one of the most honest and open signings ever, because I’m an unashamed drag queen. That’s everyone.”

“Are you telling me Madonna isn’t a drag queen?” added the TV star. “Bryan Adams is in a drag costume and has the denim look. And Barbara Bush is a drag queen.”

We are all born naked and the rest is drag.
