The cause of death of Richard Simmons is still being investigated, and third-party liability has been ruled out

Two days after the death of Richard Simmons at the age of 76, the Los Angeles coroner is investigating the cause of death, but foul play has been ruled out.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, Simmons’ cause of death was listed as “deferred,” meaning further testing is needed to determine the cause of death, People reported Monday.

The fitness guru, born Milton Teague Simmons, was known for his bubbly, optimistic personality, eccentric style and seemingly endless energy. He was found dead by his housekeeper on Saturday and a statement from his publicist said: “Today the world lost an angel.”

He celebrated his 76th birthday on Friday and wrote in a Facebook post about the birthday traditions he grew up with. “My mom never baked our birthday cakes. She bought them from different bakeries,” Simmons said. “One time I had a birthday cake that was… well, not my style. It was a chocolate cake with cowboys and Indians fighting each other. There was green frosting that looked like grass and a white picket fence around the whole cake. Maybe it had a message, but I didn’t get it.”

In his final interview with People, given just days before his death, Simmons revealed that despite the public perception that he had become a recluse in his final years, this was not actually the case.

“I know people miss me,” he said when the subject of his long public absence came up. “And you know what? I miss them too. But I can reach them by phone … and email. And sometimes I leave the house. But I’m in disguise.”

“Jane Fonda’s studio was about three miles from me and I’ve always been a fan – so one day I dressed up, put on a brown wig, a mustache, glasses, a gray sweatshirt and gray marl pants and went to her class,” Simmons said. “She never knew it was me. And she was an excellent teacher.”

He also announced that he is working on a Broadway show about his life with Patrick Leonard.

“I write the lyrics and he writes the music,” Simmons said. “The whole show is about my life – from my childhood life selling chocolates in New Orleans to my decision to retire. Every week I write an audio.”
