This is not music to their ears.
Ingrid Andress was heavily criticized for her now viral performance of the national anthem before the 2024 MLB Home Run Derby in Arlington, Texas, on Monday night.
The country singer struggled with her pitch as she performed a shaky a cappella version of “Star-Spangled Banner” that was described on social media as “painful.”
Several players on the field, including Philadelphia Phillies third baseman Alec Bohm, could be seen trying to hide their laughter when the musician missed the notes at all.
“What on earth???? God that hurt!” posted one user on X.
“This national anthem by Ingrid Andress was perhaps the worst thing to happen in America in the last 48 hours #brutal,” wrote another.
“Is this some kind of wish thing or something?” a third person wondered.
“I think we can all agree – Ingrid Andress’s national anthem broke many, many more hearts than mine. #FrancisScottOffKey #StarStrangledBanner,” chimed in a fourth.
Others compared Andress’ performance to Fergie’s poorly received national anthem at the 2018 NBA All-Star Game and Roseanne Barr’s infamous performance at a San Diego Padres game in 1990.
“Fergie watches Ingrid Andress receive the title for the worst national anthem of all time,” A user wrote.
“On a lighter note, Ingrid Andress makes Roseanne Barr look like Andrea Bocelli! @AndreaBocelli @therealroseanne @MLB,” someone else posted.
“Ingrid Andress is normally a wonderful singer. Why did she throw this one out so much? At some point even Roseanne was screaming for earplugs,” added another.
Andress has not yet commented on the reactions to her national anthem.
Given the poor reviews, many social media users were surprised to learn that she had already been nominated for a Grammy four times.
In 2021, the 32-year-old singer-songwriter was nominated for Best New Artist, Best Country Song for “More Hearts Than Mine” and Best Country Album for “Lady Like.”
She was nominated again in 2023 for “Wishful Drinking,” her duet with Sam Hunt.
