Trump supporters call on Biden to withdraw from the presidential campaign

Last updated on July 15, 2024 by BVN

Overview: Supporters of former President Donald Trump are calling for President Joe Biden to drop out of the presidential race. However, the author argues that Biden should stay in the race because of his proven record of defending civil rights and advocating for equal employment opportunities, affordable health insurance, women’s reproductive rights, and investment in black-owned businesses. The author also stresses the importance of focusing on the price of freedom and equality and resisting attempts to take us back to the days of racial segregation and discrimination.

Hardy Brown, Sr.

It is ridiculous to listen to some Democrats calling for President Joe Biden to drop out of the presidential race.

I remember what Paul wrote in a letter to the Philippians in chapter 3, verses 13-14. “But one thing I do know: I forget what lies behind me and keep pressing forward toward what lies ahead, keeping my eye on the prize in front of me.” Then in verse 16, Paul reminds them not to forget what they have already accomplished.

A lot has happened since the debate, and last Saturday a 20-year-old white registered Republican attempted to assassinate former President Donald Trump. We currently do not know why. Regardless of his motive, I do not condone killing anyone because of different political beliefs or views.

During my 60 years in politics, I have not liked it when someone lies about other candidates, forges signatures on mail-in ballots – as a candidate running against me once did – just to win an election; or when someone finds mail-in ballots – as the city of San Bernardino did against Ralph Hernandez when he was running for city council.

In the two cases mentioned above, one person went to jail for forging signatures and in the other case, I threatened the city that I would have the Attorney General investigate the election.

In every election, candidates should explain why they are seeking public office and lay out their vision without lying to voters about the other candidates in the race. It is up to each voter to educate themselves about each candidate or rely on people they know and trust before casting their vote.

One of the verses of the song “Keeping Your Eyes on the Prize” goes: “The only thing we did was right, That was the day we started fighting. Keep your eye on the prize, hold on, hold on.” This is what we did during the civil rights movement of the ’50s and ’60s. We kept our eyes on the goal, and in 1964 the Civil Rights Act was passed, and in 1965 the Voting Rights Act was passed.

The struggle was not easy, and many black leaders had different views on how to get there. Some wanted to take up arms and fight, like the Black Panther Party or Malcolm X of the Nation of Islam, who famously said, “By any means necessary.” On the other hand, leaders like Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., labor leader A. Phillip Randolph, the Urban League, the National Council of Negro Women, and others advocated peaceful marches and protests.

Today, however, I am reminded of the agreement between Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr. They agreed not to fall out over different policies because they shared the same goal. Their common goal was to pass laws that gave blacks the right to work, housing, education, business credit, voting rights, and equal rights under the law. This mutual agreement led to the signing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 60 years ago and subsequent civil rights legislation, including Roe vs. Wade, the Equality Act, the Americans With Disability Act, and others.

In the 1950s and 1960s, there were Southern Democrats like Governor George Wallace of Alabama who stood in the doorway of colleges with other white conservative Christians and said: Segregation now. Segregation tomorrow. Segregation forever”, to prevent black children from going to school with white children.

Today, Republicans and white Christian nationalists are trying to take us back to that time. If you don’t believe me, read the Heritage Group report, Project 2025: Mandate Leadership – The Conservative Promise. It was written by known Trump loyalists from his previous administration.

Project 2025 envisages an expansion of the president’s powers, and the US Supreme Court made it clear in its recent decision that Donald Trump will enjoy extensive immunity if re-elected.

The chairman of the conservative heritage group Project 2025, Kevin Rogers, says it will be a peaceful and bloodless revolution unless there is resistance from the left.

If Donald Trump were elected in November 2024, he would have immunity and the power to impose martial law across the country if people participate in peaceful protests.

It was Governor Lester Maddox of Arkansas who stood in the doorway of his restaurant with an axe handle to prevent blacks from entering his public places of business.

It was Police Chief Eugene “Bull” Connors in Birmingham, Alabama, who deployed German shepherds and batons while using fire hoses to beat black students, preventing them from peacefully protesting.

During all these difficult years, we as a people have never lost sight of civil rights.

We are now faced with the choice of electing a felon convicted on 34 counts; an individual who incited an insurrection against the federal government on January 6, 2021; an individual convicted of sexual assault with the courts awarding his victim hundreds of millions of dollars; and an individual who, if reelected, vows to use the Justice Department against his political opposition to indict and imprison them. That opposition will include news media and journalists who would speak out against his administration and its policies despite the freedom of the press enshrined in the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. In addition, on Monday, July 15, he announced Senator JD Vance as his vice president and running mate. A far-right Extremist JD Vance thinks a nationwide abortion ban is a “good idea.” He has also suggested that women in abusive relationships should not be allowed to divorce, praised Project 2025, and attacked both Social Security and Medicare.

Or we can elect a person who swears to serve the public with dignity and respect, as the Constitution says no one is above the law. Someone who has a track record of defending our civil rights, namely the right to vote, the right to own a home, and the right to go to college without taking on a lot of debt after graduation. That person is someone who supports equal employment opportunity, affordable health insurance, women’s reproductive rights including the right to abortion, addresses climate change issues, and invests in Black-owned businesses.

It is up to us, the voters, to keep our eyes on the price of freedom and to hold on. . . Hold on. . .
